I use chrome in my office and safari with apple in my reading room. I do not believe it has anything to do with what we are using but site management. The moderators are not IT people and seem to worry more about being police than site design. Hopefully they’ll get on the stick.
@cdaquila - can you report this? Major degradation in the web site over the last few weeks.
Wonder if the Edmunds forum uses the same software, they’re also having problems.
Same here. Win 10 and Firefox’s built in (I think) ad blocker. Works great.
I use Microsoft Edge with an Ad-blocker. No problem what-so-ever.
Lately, pressing “Skip” on those video pop ups takes me TO the advertiser instead of closing the damn thing
Ditto the “X” in the corner of popups here and on other websites.
Same with me. Many Tek experts think uBlock Origin is the best ad blocker out there. I’ve been using Firefox for years.
I had been thinking about installing DDG for some time, but I had hesitated until today. I am now using it, and–VOILA!–no jumping around or pop-up ads!
Yay!
agree with this, it’s very hard to read threads. DDG is not an option on work computer.
Thanks, trying a no ad-blocker version of Microsoft Edge – once I figured out how to delete the cookies — definitely seems a little better. But still getting a second ghost posting.
Does your employer have an ad blocker installed or allow you do install one?
In this area most tech employers don’t all any new software installs on company computers without IT ok. And IT seldom oks. IT says the problem is that new software could do most anything inside the computer , including keystroke logging of user personal data like SSN, company secrets, etc, and send the data to offshore no-good-nicks, with the user thinking all is well. .
You can setup Edge so cookies are automatically deleted when you close the browser. That’s what I do.
Welcome to the peaceful, ad wise, forum… lol
IIRC it was Mr jtsanders and Mr Bing that convinced me to come over to the Duck side, and like you I was very hesitant to swap over, I basically only use it for this forum, but since Sep IIRC I have had ZERO ADs on this forum…
BTW, I did open the forum just for ha ha’s in google again and WOW it was terrible…
All I am going to say is if you are still having issues with the ads on Car Talk, unless it is a work thing, it is YOUR fault… If you keep doing the same thing expecting a different outcome, well… lol
I’d like to know why the mods are so silent on this site (@cdaquila). A decent website shouldn’t need people jumping through hoops with ad blockers and new browsers just to use it. I’m not saying those are a bad idea. Just that…well, I visit quite a few forums. This one is outstanding in its dysfunctionality.
One more vote for DDG, took all of 3 minutes on my iPhone. No more odd behavior, either.
I’m using Firefox with Adblock Ultimate and no problems at all.
no, IT’s response is “Don’t go to forums on the company computer.”
lol
why the mods are so silent [about the known site problems]
I expect the site admins are very aware of this issue, but the problem is there’s no simple & quick sol’n currrently available. So they are now working on a plan. Seems the best approach.
In the mean-time I’ve switched from Chrome to Edge, and delete the browser cookies frequently. Not a perfect solution, but seems much better.

+1
In my last career, working for a couple of Deputy AGs, I was warned that I couldn’t install anything on the computer without permission from IT, and–as you implied–getting that permission is close to impossible. At that time, the State of NJ was limping along with mainframes that were really old, and just breathing the wrong way could send them into a tailspin, so I understood that the restrictions were necessary. Heck, I wasn’t even allowed to bring in my own computer mouse in order to replace the state-supplied mouse that lacked a scrolling wheel!
What makes you so sure? I’m not so sore the admins have much to do with the design or repair.
