Getting harder to follow threads because of ads

I have a 2019 Mac Pro, I7 processor, operating system up to date. I have been having and issue reading the threads for some time but it is getting worse.

I don’t mind the ads that appear at various intervals as I read the posts in the threads, but every time an ad changes, the page jumps back either to the beginning or at least some point above where I am. The problem is that sometimes the ads are changing so fast that I can’t finish a post before the page jumps, and I am a fast reader. It doesn’t happen when I am writing a comment to a thread but as I am writing this post, a video ad just suddenly appeared in the middle of my post and I had to wait for it to finish. Fortunately is was a short video.

Ditto with a 2020 LG Gram runnning Chrome Version 130.0.6723.117!
Additionally, I noticed yesterday that, when I posted a reply, a “ghost” version of my reply appeared directly above the real one. The ghost seemed to disappear after a few minutes.

Yeah, I had the ghost thing just happen to me. It went way when I refreshed the page.

I’m using an iPhone 14 Pro Max and safari browser. I’m experiencing the exact symptoms you described here. Also, when I thumb up a particular member for their excellent and non-offensive answers, my thumb up goes to someone else not intended. I also see that my single answer is duplicated 6 times once submitted.

Like you, I’m having a hard time reading comments because the ads would send the page I’m on to the very top randomly and repeatedly.

I don’t know what you are all on about!

Intel i7 processor running Windows 10 using DuckDuckGo’s browser. Also on an Android tablet running DuckDuckGo’s browser.

Neither has any of these issues. Not sure why. I’d blame Apple products but @VDCdriver’s machine is comparable to mine in vintage and has the same issue. Maybe Chrome is that issue.

Yes, that is also happening to me.
And, I’m continuing to get those ghost versions of my own posts.

Try uBlock Origin blocker. I’m running it on Firefox and I never see any ads on this site, or other sites.

As I said before in a previous post- it’s very close to unusable site. I’m also running Chrome with all its built in ad blockers etc enabled. The problem is the Discord site software continuously creates and destroys embedded blocks for the ads. That causes the posts to jump around. Just create the ad space once and then change the ads inside of that block. That will stop the jumping. This site is not the only one using this software and I don’t see this elsewhere which leads me to believe it is an artifact of the way it is being used, not inherent to the software itself.

Something else has started happening recently that others have also mentioned. The postings are duplicated numerous times in ghosted form- like a very light shade of the font color. I’ve also noticed that “likes” don’t properly update unless you refresh the thread by leaving and coming back.

It’s a disaster at this point.

Same exact problem here using Chrome which is the most popular browser IIRC — plus I’m having another one, keyboard entries unbearably sluggish . I’m happy to hear the DDG browser solves these problems but many computer users are reluctant to install new software on a hope, remembering the hours and hours of tasks to rectify what happened to their computer the last time they did that.

Same here - Edge/ windows 11. very annoying. and it does not happen on any other sites. Also if i give a thumbs up it wont work until i refresh page. another example just now. I gave a thumbs up to texases and it gave it to jtsanders instead

On my iphone8 with Safari I encounter this jumping around a different websites. I don’t use my iPhone for Car Talk. The instability does appear to occur with many websites. I use DuckDuckGo on my iPad for Car Talk and have different instability issues. I log in and it takes me to my setup page. I click on Car Talk on the menu bar and it takes me to the login page again. I hit the login button and I’m logged in with out additional effort. A minor extra step, but unnecessary.

Also, when I read the first thread then hit the back button it takes me to whatever I was doing before Car Talk. I have to go to the menu and click on Topics to get back to the home page. After the first thread, it behaves normally.

I just started suffering those problems in the last week or so, multiple apparent posts that clear up, inconsistent function of the ‘thumbs up’. The ads have been a pain for much longer. Edge/Windows 11.

Last week’s forum improvements include the reply “ghosting” and “like” button corruption.

The advertisement insertion and withdrawal in the middle of the page has been a problem since first reported in April.

The moderators don’t review the threads, they won’t notice this one.

Those folks do seem to review the “site feedback” section. On occasion however it isn’t possible to post to that section. C’est La Vie. Hopefully one of the website gurus will explain what’s happening and their fix-it plan .

I should add that I’ve been successful at reducing these problems a little at least by frequently deleting the browser’s stored data .

My experience too.

Used Google Chrome (still do for about everything else with little issues)

Car Talk with Google Chrome = bad, freeze up, WAYYYYY to many ads and pop ups, Dave very un happy

Car Talk with DuckDuckGo = good, Dave happy now

I feel like an idiot for not doing it much sooner!!!

Mac mini 2014, Firefox and adblock+ I see no ads and am having no problems with the site except
that right now I don’t see any general reply button but have to reply to one of the posts.

Page still jumping around, chromebook and ubuntu using chrome, It has gotten better, used to hop me back 5 or 6 posts, now at least after the bounce I am where I left off. Have not tried it on win10

I agree it’s a disaster and unusable

But I feel it’s because of 3 or 4 particular thin-skinned and out-of-touch users
