Your site is becoming practically unusable due to the embedded ads

You need to figure out how to embed ad space that is persistent. As it is now, the ads come and go causing the posts to jump around so much it is almost unusable. I’ve been frequenting this site for decades but if this persists, I’m done using it. It’s that bad.

What got on my nerves the worst was the stupid little slide out ad that counts down and then say remove ad, just so another one slides right back out right over top of everything no matter what you are reading and or doing…

With that being said, I finally downloaded Duckduckgo and have been using it for this site for the last few days and have yet to see a single ad, not even at the top were there is ample room for banners… It was like flipping a light switch, soooo much better now… Time will only tell how long it will last but so far so good…

BTW, I think that the ad problem is probably the biggest reason why the decline in new member activity… We don’t need to find ways to bring in new members, just need to find away to not annoy them long enough for the off topic post to do that for us…

EDITED to say a big thank you to all those that kept telling me and others to use DuckDuckGo…

I also use DDG and have for months. I see white space where ads used to be and there is no video registration issue.

I’ve used the Firefox browser for years. uBlock Origin (extension) is my adblocker.

I have the same.
I’m impressed with how well uBlock Origin works, not only on this site but all others as well.

I use a cell phone on here and the ads are annoying indeed. Safari web browser.

But I spend more time trying to defend myself against judgment more so than blocking ads :joy:

The invasive ads were brought to their attention 6 months ago, I don’t think they read “Site Feedback” or they just don’t care to maintain this forum.

The advertisements are understandable and not going away. I have no issue with ads. Previously, it was an annoyance I could live with in order to enjoy using the site. The reason I re-posted is, the nuisance overheating recently became a blown head gasket and could not even read an entire thread. The interface became unusable.

If you’re going to insert an advertisement in-line with the posts- then create it and leave it there. The issue may be with the way Discourse is being used. Persistent ad space versus this create/delete/create methodology…lots of other sites have embedded ads, they don’t make the content jump back and forth…

Install AdBlock on your browser (Chrome or Firefox). It’s free and works like a charm.

Free? Makes a person wonder how they can afford to give away their product?

Their revenue comes from a combination of donations (you can make a donation at the time you download the product) and the fees paid by advertisers to be whitelisted. I’m sure there are other revenue streams but I’m not that familiar with their business model. All I know is when the products is downloaded and installed, most of the ads are gone.

Thanks for the explanation. Advertisers pay a fee to prevent their ads from being deleted. And that’s how they make money giving away their product. Makes sense, but seems more like deferring the problem rather than solving it. Deferring is better than nothing though. worth a try as long it is certain the program isn’t also cyber-spying. .

When you hover the cursor (don’t press the mouse button) over the tab at the top left that says "Your site is becoming … " , does it say something about “high memory usage”? Mine currently says “High memory usage, 2.3 GB”. If you see that, you can probably get a little relief by clearing the browser’s temporary data. “delete browser data” is what I click, using Chrome’s utility functions.

There is a paid version. But it is free. I’ve been using it for years.

Up Date, at least 5 days later and I have not seen a single ad or pop up of any kind while on the forum and using DuckDuckGo…

Still getting used to the DDG version of Google search, so I keep both pulled up, but liking it more and more…
