New Super Annoying Ads

I have enjoyed the Car Talk Community for several years. Occasionally I contribute but mostly I read. Starting this week, I think, I am getting pop up video ads. They pop up on top on the lower right, and a few have even popped up with sound on. It was bad enough they made me disable my ad-blocker but this is bordering on the intolerable. Does anyone else see this? Is there a way to make the ads less intrusive?

Yes, I have had them also, videos in the right lower corner… even a few in the scroll, which is even more than normal, making what you are trying to read jump far enough that I have to scroll to find where I was again… As someone that doesn’t like to read in the 1st place it can really :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: you off…

I can handle the adds, but they should NEVER make the post jump up/down while trying to read them…

Use a different browser. I use DuckDuckGo and don’t allow cookies. There are blank spaces where ads used to be. Another alternative is to mute sound and while the ad runs in the background you can read and post in peace.

I have my Firefox browser set up to never see any of the ads. I see blank spaces where the ads would go.

Here are the settings I use, though they can be set on any browser.

  • Block Cross-site tracking cookies and isolate other cross-site cookies.
  • Block Tracking content
  • Block Cryptominers
  • Block Known fingerprinters

Your list made me think. I opened a 'Private Window" and (knock on wood) the annoying ads are gone. And I get a private window with shift-Ctrl-P. Thanks.

Get an Ad-blocker.

I have one. cartalk.com does not allow it. You get an even more annoying message to turn it off.

On my computer the esc key dismisses the notice,

I have one too, and cartalk site never complained about the one I use.

I have the ad’s but I can click on them to make it easier to use the site. There’s one on the bottom that sometimes blocks the reply button, annoying but not that hard to deal with. Windows 11 using Edge

I was using Safari on an iPad. All sorts of problems with advertisements on CarTalk.
Initially I was skeptical of downloading Duck duck go, last week I did get duck duck go. DDG solved the problems I had with Car Talk.
Try it, if you don’t like DDG, you can always remove it from whatever tablet, laptop, or tower computer you are using.

I am a big dummy when it comes to computer stuff, so forgive me for my (possible) stupid question in advance… lol

Can you move (import?) all your bookmarks from Google (Chrome) to DDG?? I have folders inside of folders inside of folders and tons of stuff I keep up with all bookmarked going back almost 20 years now, maybe more…

I’m seeing the vdo ads at the lower right too. They are a little annoying, but I don’t consider them “super-annoying”, so I just live w/them. I turn them off by clicking the X or “skip” if they get too annoying. The ads of course pay the bills here, so probably in everybody’s best interest to try to live w/them. I don’t mind the static ads in- between the posts at all. Provided they remain static once inserted, and don’t constantly change to cause the thread to bounce around. The first priority for improving the advertising features imo is to prevent the thread bouncing around.

Yeah I just started getting them today too. Hit the x and just come back again. I’m usually on safari.
