I fix equinoxes and have owned 10+.
Got a noise from driver strut. Strut is newer quick strut per sticker.
Sway bar links are new. As are sway bar bushings.
I threw on a good looking strut assy as test and sound is no different.
So, previous strut was bad? Newer strut is also bad?
Or it’s something else?
Possible
Unlikely
Very likely.
Previous owner had wrong battery which was not secured. As in bouncing around. That’s it. Yep. New secured battery made no difference.
I used pry bar on ball joint. Seems tight. Checked motor mounts. Seem ok.
Inspected caliper for pin issue. Seems ok.
I also have torrent. I inspected cv axles on both vehicles and they feel the same. No lateral movement and tiny bit of in/out play. Torrent has no suspension noise.
Trans mounts on both have same stiffness/deflection
How about a description of the noise, and the reason you thought it’s from the strut?
Did you also swap out the strut bearing?
Small bumps do not seem to cause noise. It’s the washboard kind of bad pavement that does. I’m leaning towards upper trans mount on driver side
Does stopping, accelerating, turning right vs left affect the noise?
Have you considered a gonzo parts replacement, all control arms, links, & strut mounts?
Any chance the noise is from something else, jack rattling, loose bolts/nuts in glove box?
Yes, the left/right/left quick swerving will make the noise.
A little confused. As a non mechanic, a quick strut should include the upper mount and spring in one package. A bare strut will rewire reuse of the upper mount. Two different ones with same issue, then something else in my view.
Have you checked the wheel bearings/hubs for play? The most common way for that present is more like a droning noise, but I’d at least check them. The control arm bushings as well.
Check control arm/sub frame bushings.
Tester
Also make sure the spring is in its lower and upper seats properly and not contacting the strut tower.
While checking the control arm bushings and such, make sure all the bolts/nuts are good n tight…
Have someone drive the vehicle forward and rearward hitting the brakes to see if the wheel is shifting forward/rearward while hitting the brakes, like extreme pos/neg caster movement…
Upper trans mount is hyd. Maybe it’s worn out. I got it out. Have one on order.
