They are moving our world view forward. They, the active federal govt. Is tasked with enforcing legislative enacted laws, NOT MAKING THEM. This stuff about “they wanting” anything is not happening in fact. It’s like some think the federal govt is some forth governmental entity after the congress, legislative and judicial branches. They are the enactive force behind you the people. You don’t like you the people, elect those who better represent your own sell interest…like eliminating your social security and Medicare. Because, eliminating the federal govt. from our lives means eliminating a lot more influences then Robts. Laundry problems.
Btw, there are a lot fewer federal regs then you think. It seems a lot because when you include state and local, it really adds up. And no, kids aren’t going hungry because of the AG. Your govt. preferences are showing. It’s the sequester and refusal to release or authorize funds by the republican control house in a budget they already approved.
First, you haven’t spent much time with the legislative process if you think that most laws and regs originate with the legislators. Most of them originate by agency staff and many times they are not even fully read before being passed. Not the other way around with congress initiating legislation for agencies to implement. Sorry but that’s the way sausage is made and why it has become troubling.
Second, I don’t know where you have been, but the Agriculture Department implemented new school nutrition standards which has made it nearly impossible to feed kids at school lunches so that they do not go away hungry. Only certain foods and certain portions are allowed or no federal money. No pizza etc. and the kids hate it.
We have several government residential school in our town. The school administrator is pulling her hair out because the kids are going hungry under the new rules. Athletes that used to be allowed seconds or larger portions can’t get them anymore. The foods that meet the new requirements are not filling. So you have grade school and high school kids living there that can’t get enough to eat or they’ll get fat. They can’t exactly go to a store or restaurant to supplement their diet since these are blind or deaf kids. Its just rediculous what what the Agriculture Department has done while at the same time increased food stamps by over 50 billion but let kids go hungry under their school lunch program.
Just remember whichever world view is being implemented, it’s only supported by 50% of the people. Not hardly OUR world view.
Agriculture Department implemented new school nutrition standards.
They came out with a list of NEW GUIDELINES…They did NOT and have NEVER regulated what a school system can implement. Our town choose to ignore the guideline. The town next to us has implemented some of. It is NOT REGULATED. Where did you get that??
Athletes that used to be allowed seconds or larger portions can't get them anymore.
Again…That has NOTHING to do with the Fed’s…but with YOUR school system.
And as for kids going hungry!!! I hate to tell you this…but kids are getting fatter and fatter and fatter. Nutrition (or lack there of) choice is thee major contributor. Show me an obese kid and I’ll show you one with extremely poor eating habits. You need 6000 calories of junk food to give you the same nutritional value of 2500 calories of good healthy food. Kids go hungry eating junk food. The guidelines by the Agriculture Department helps many school systems who have no idea what to feed their kids. Sometimes is at the discretion of the 350lb Lunchroom lady. “Want to guess what her nutritional choices are??”
In our local school system the parents buy meal cards for the students. They can buy what they want…and the parents can go on-line and look at what their kid eats every day. It’s up to the parents to monitor their kids.
I’d like to know where you’re getting your mis-information from.
@Bing
With all due respect, some things said out of context. You said it all when you said, "or no federal monies ".
Many are under the mistaken impression that the Feds actually regulate ALL school lunch programs in what they get for foods and how they serve it. The regulations only come if you use their federal monies. If the locals want to implement their own program, like @MikeInNh has indicated, they do it with their own monies. This is true for school lunch and it’s true for local law enforcement it’s true for most everything you receive govt. aid. I have been doing this stuff for years working with govt. agencies. You want their funds, there are restrictions. You want to do it your way, fine, do it on your own. You think it’s any different then when Pepsi paid for a new score board in your gym ? You want their money, you’ll have to display their advertisement when doing it.
A school I worked for received no federal aid and did pretty much what they wanted as kids brought their own lunches. It’s the same today. There are no free passes. You don’t want federal Interference, don’t invite them in.
Right now, 25 states don’t want the federal Medicaid funds that used to go to hospitals to pay for emergency care for the uninsured. You don’t want the money, fine. But don’t complain when your people go uninsured because you can afford to set up your own exchanges with these funds, because the hospitals can’t afford the free mandated care, like Mass has done for several years with fed funds. Then, they whine because the uninsured overwhelm the Federal system when it’s suppose to work best by using local and state options. It’s a joke. But the joke is on the obese and the uninsured, which together is killing 30,000 a year.
Btw, Your school lunch programs have lots of local and state mandates as well in order to receive their funds.
All programs are legislated ! The implementation may be discretionary with the individual agency, but, ocal, state and federal legislation provides the funds and the general impetus.
@MikeInNH is absolutely right. Obesity is a nation wide problem and though many states and locals have taken initiatives, they still lack the funds to get control by paying for local lunch programs.
Kids are eating crap for food when there is no control. Kids don’t like not having HFCS and foods laced with additives like aspartame so they don’t have to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s not an easy battle but it’s worse when people blame others, for their own inadequacy in raising their own kids.
Obesity is and will continue to be THE GREATEST COST to our healthcare system.
The regulations only come if you use their federal monies.
Our town gets the federal money. What that has helped us do it provide healthier choices for the kids. We were NOT forced to eliminate Pizza. We just now have the money to offer a choice.
Btw, kids do get hungry when denied foods they were weaned on with additives. That’s what the food industry planned on ! Ever look in a year book of your past. Fatter kids were then 20 lbs over weight. Some different from our hungry kids today who are now 100 lbs overweight…and it’s getting worse without nutritional education and options. It’s expensive. I will admit that some administrations have taken the wrong path. Like under the Reagan administration, his Aggie Dept. determined Kechup was a vegetable. Good grief. No wonder are kids are getting fatter !
And Mike, a more healthy pizza. I don’t want to pick on pizza, just pizza on white bread dough with ingredients made with additives that are bad nutritionally.
And Mike, a more healthy pizza. I don't want to pick on pizza, just pizza on white bread dough with ingredients made with additives that are bad nutritionally.
I didn’t say anything about a healthier pizza… I know Pizza isn’t healthy. The point I was making is that even though we did get federal money for our school program…we didn’t have to eliminate Pizza. It’s still on the menu every day. What the fed money did do was allow us to add healthier choices.
Although you don’t NEED federal money to do that. Each town and choose it on their own. But the money was available so we took it.
I’m sorry, I made my point poorly. My wife is a healthy food cook and can make the most delicious, whole wheat crust pizza with veggies. Pizza can be nutritious and made healthy. I was just saying, I don’t want to pick on pizza as it’s a dish of ingredients and not a food type. Offering a more healthy pizza option is worthwhile too and eliminating the ingredients that make the pizza les nutritious. I don’t want to pick on ice cream either…
Unfortunately, when reteaching young kids how to eat, not providing anything but the healthy choices is the best way. Unfortunately too, schools are caught in the crossfire, as that’s the parents job. How can we rationalize even putting soda or any poor food out there as option ? I had a tough time with that when teaching. I would relegate the fast foods per say, to the vending machines, outside next to the smoking area, off school grounds…in the perfect world.
As wrongfully attributed to Marie Antoinette…let them eat “whole wheat” or “raw veggies and fruit”. But no cake under any circumstances.
When I eat Pizza I’m not looking watching calories…or nutrition. Even the worse Pizza has some nutrition.
Made the right way, pizza can be an almost perfect dish as a way of getting the most key nutrients in one course, usually only if you make it yourself and not at some pizzeria. The original pizzas were made with that in mind. Calories are not the best way to assign food value as you know, and neither is weight the best way to monitor health. In both, it’s food composition and body composition. There are people out there that sadly say, they don’t eat raw fruit because there are too many calories. Then, they down a fake “fruit flavored drink” thinkinking they are getting the nutrients with those empty calories. A well made pizza can have sufficient nutrients to curb an appetite even though it itself has a high calorie content. It can still be a good food. Kids need calories…they don’t need empty calories. It’s the lack of nutrients that throws the human self control out of wack and not calorie counting. Measure your food by nutrients per calorie and your weight by physical measurement and body mass index. Diabetes prompted by obesity is the biggest long term health problem…not any single disease alone.
Wow, do you like grape or cherry Kool Aide? Just said the central government is involved in every aspect of our lives and no reason to believe there isn’t someone there interested in the size of our yards or garages and wanting to do something about it for the common good. Then you folks try to justify the intrusion in our lives as they collect our money and pass it out again with conditions for our own good. I suspect the elimination of many physical ed programs due to funding and the need to provide other mandated curriculum has had something to do with fat kids and adults. This is the way it goes-create a program to solve a condition, then the unintended consequences cause other problems that another program needs to be created to address. It is an ever expanding unending cycle is all with unlimited needs to be addressed, until all the money runs out.
Just said the central government is involved in every aspect of our lives and no reason to believe there isn't someone there interested in the size of our yards or garages and wanting to do something about it for the common good.
WOW…Where you come with this?? Fox News?? Why would anyone above the State level be interested in the size of your yard/house or garage? Could you show me ONE legitimate source?
Then you folks try to justify the intrusion in our lives as they collect our money and pass it out again with conditions for our own good.
Hey…you don’t have to take the money. There are MANY instances here in NH were we turned down the Fed money because of just that. But what you want…is you want the Federal welfare…but not any control of how that money is to be spent. We all know how well that worked in the past. Can you say “Block Grants”??
I suspect the elimination of many physical ed programs due to funding and the need to provide other mandated curriculum has had something to do with fat kids and adults.
If you’re so concerned about it…then why doesn’t your town do something about it?? Why are you asking the Feds for your help? Why didn’t your town or state create your own program. Our state did!!!
@bing
Eliminating phys Ed which meets twice or three times a week for an hour to play dodge ball has helped create our obesity problem ? What were we thinking of ? It’s so easy to make America healthy again. How could the rest of us have been so blind ? Maybe if we substitute ball room dancing in PE ! I know for a fact that the ballroom dancing community has fewer obese people as a percent of total then the post PE elimination group.
