Here’s how I view that position- if I regularly enjoy a walk but there’s one house with an aggressive dog that will consistently harass me and people tell me it’s my own fault because I can just as easily cross to the other side to avoid the dog…
This web site wants to attract people to visit and contribute. They need us more than we need them.
It shouldn’t be on me to work around their annoying ad harassment.
It behooves them to make the experience pleasant and not foist “solutions” on their customers.
Or they will certainly find that traffic on this site dwindles to the point it is no longer a viable enterprise.
DDG is loaded on a tablet I have and works as advertised. That is not an option on the laptop I prefer to do a majority of my surfing on. So I have “gotten over it” but as a result, I do far less visiting of this site than I have over the last few decades…there are plenty of other sites where I can get my fix helping other people solve problems that provide an enjoyable experience interacting with their site…
While I agree with you that the folks who run this site should be responsible for making it much more user-friendly, it is really easy to install DDG on that laptop. I did it a few weeks ago, and I currently use it only for this site.
I keep both Chrome and DDG open on my laptop, and it’s really very easy to switch between those two browsers for my various visits to different sites.
You may have missed my post around 48-49 on this also…
The get over it was more for the regulars still complaining that have been giving multiple solutions by much smarter members then me, and still have done nothing about it…
If your worn wiper blades streak instead of cleaning the windshield and you post about it and are told to replace them and don’t, well don’t complain about it anymore… replace them or get over it…
I had also said somewhere, that if you can, work computers are the exception to the rule… Or use your own computer…
“Get over it” means that for those who are using a company computer or a public computer to buy their own computer and carry it with themselves for Car Talk. I don’t think that will happen.
So far, it’s only been the “regulars” that have expressed concern about the dysfunctional web site. Frequenting the site makes installing software to overcome the nuisance worthwhile. Imagine a first time or infrequent user coming here to ask a question and the text box is jumping all over the place. Do you think they are going to install DDG just to post a question? More likely, they just won’t bother to come here. That, in my mind, is the larger issue regarding viability of the site.
