can the fuel pump be accessed thru the trunk or does the tank have to be dropped ?

Try lifting the rear seat bottom. It may require the aid of a prybar covered with a towel for protection, but lift the front edge and pull straign forward.

There is an access panel in the trunk, remove the spare tire and trim panel. (Alldata)
