This is odd. I used to get that once in a great while, like maybe once a month before the recent site move, I haven’t had it since. In fact the only problem I have had is in getting my replies to post at all.
I’m running Window’s XP with Google Chrome and everything is running fine.
Now I also get a “website restore error”, with a big X and the message “We were unable to return you to Cartalk.com”. Under details it says “When a website causes a failure or crash, Internet Explorer attempts to restore the site. It stops after two tries to avoid an endless loop.”
Can’t say, but I see no less than 15 called scripts (from vanillaforums.com) and at least 10 more internal to the page, some called from still more sites (doubleclick, cars.com, googlesyndication.com at least).
When it’s a pulled code from another site, they have to trust it works exactly as it’s supposed to…and that it doesn’t interfere with other scripts. There may be an interference issue.
Is your Java also up to date? They’ve had updates as well. If the scripts happen to use a same variable (like “Logon_Name”) and then make it “global” so all scripts can access it, it can overwrite other data. Now, I doubt they have a data overwrite issue, as they’ve gone to great lengths to make sure the scripts don’t do that, however, the way they interact with something on your computer can cause a problem.
I’m running (on this machine) Vista Ultimate, 32-bit, FireFox 8.0 with the folloing addons:
Adblock Plus 2.0.2
Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon 0.3
Download Manager Tweak 0.9.5
NoScript 2.2.5
avast! WebRep 6.0.1367 (disabled)
Microsoft .NET Framework Asistant 0.0.0 (disabled)
- And plugins:
Adobe Acrobat 10.1.1.33
Garmin Communicator Plug-In 2.9.3.0
iTunes Application Detector 1.0.1.11
Microsoft Office 2003 11.0.8161.0
nVidia 3D Vision 7.17.12.6099 - Vision plugin
nVidia 3D Visions 7.17.12.6099 - Vision streaming plugin
QuickTime Plug-in 7.7 7.7.0.0
Shockwave Flash 11.1.102.55
Silverlight Plug-In 4.0.60831.0
Windows Live Photo Gallery 15.4.3502.922
Windows Presentation Foundation 3.5.30729.1
It’s important to notice that the video drivers are also running inside the browser. Thus, not just your software, but also your system drivers can play a part in whether or not things go as they should.

“Thanks all. I’m not able to install new web-browsing software on this 'puter or I’d try that. It looks like I’ll have to live w/it for now. It seems this problem is affecting quite a few people, so I’m sure the Car Talk web-gurus are working on fixing it.”
2 great free tools from microsoft as I would guess you have a problem (ie virus malware) they can solve.
Make sure you select the correct version.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Then get a good anti virus etc. These tools will remove the offending problems but a windows repair may be necessary.
Run the first one on your computer (One and all). I am thankful to microsoft for these free tools, as they have helped because there is not a perfect solution. Then install firefox and adblock plus! If you have win 7 right click and run as administrator.
He can’t…that’s the problem. He doesn’t control the computer.
Unfortunately because the problem still happens on the latest and greatest IE and operating system…still doesn’t point to the web-site being the problem.
There are way too many other factors (what else in installed on computer, Who’s your service provider, How are you connecting to the internet (dial-up, cable modem).
And unfortunately it’s up to YOU to solve this yourself. No we-site in the world is going to trouble shoot this for you…and they’re certainly NOT going to make any changes to the web-site when the VAST MAJORITY is NOT having any problems what-so-ever.
Mike is absolutely correct, and being on a system you can’t control also has an impact, however!..
You can still enable/disable addons and plug-ins. Try it one at a time, figure out which one is causing the problem, and THEN report which one it is. At least that way, we (they) have a chance of figuring out what’s happening, and if it’s worth pursuing.

Chaissos if you had read rather than skim read you would understand that link one, then if needed link 2 will correct the problem. THE SOLUTIONS PROVIDED WILL REMOVE THE MALWARE THAT PREVENTS INSTALLING FIREFOX. Can I holler any louder as your "He can’t…that’s the problem. He doesn’t control the computer. " will be corrected. There are none so deaf as those who will not listen.
I’m not deaf, but you can holler all you want. I haven’t heard him say whether or not this is his personal computer or not. If it’s a work computer (which is the assumption I’m making), then he can’t install anything because he doesn’t have permission.
And many viruses will do this, too. Not just malware. It’s called IE hijacking, and there are TONS of them out there. You can’t just fix everything, all the time.
DUH, that is why I provided the links to solve the problem! I think the permission is impaired and resolved linking to the fix I provided, even used them at work computers I administer logged on as a limited user!
and being on a system you can’t control also has an impact, however!..
If a work computer you may be very limited to your solutions. Some companies have very specific software you are allowed to install. In many cases the user isn’t allowed to install software. Large corporations (especially companies that want very tight control on their networks) have some very strict rules. I know of at least one company that mandates ALL systems to only have IE installed…and when a new version comes out it must go through a software validation process before it is allowed to be installed by everyone.
test…AAAaaahhhhh This is the first time in a week I could post…
Howdy folks, this is Lincoln from the Vanilla Forums developer team. If you’re having a problem with error messages, I need 2 things: Your browser’s name AND version number, and the full text of the error (or as much of it as you can get). This discussion is really muddled so I’m having trouble telling if everyone’s still talking about the same thing.
If you have browser recommendations, let’s keep that in another discussion. And no, @littlemouse, there is no IE for Mac anymore That ended in 2003.
Firefox 8.0 (I tried IE also, no difference). Message was “Network Error”.
Site loaded normally and responded normally. When the “post comment” button was clicked, the 3 little bars up next to “save draft” appeared and danced for 30 seconds, a little longer, then the 'Network Error" box appeared…That persisted all last week…This morning, everything back to normal. I changed nothing on my end…
With IE8, I get an error message, “A Problem With This Website Caused Internet Explorer To Close And Reopen The Tab.” Then the website partially opens then freezes and I exit the website.
If I use AOL as my home page I get an AOL error message, “An Error Occured While Browsing. Please Wait While AOL Attempts To Restart The Browser”. Again, the website partially opens and then freezes.
I don’t have any of these problems with any other websites I visit.
Tester
IE9 has a lot of compatibility problems with many sites in my experience. I’d ‘downgrade’ to IE8 or use an alternative browser, such as Firefox or Chrome. Firefox has proven very reliable with this site. After some initial hiccups when the site was redesigned, I have not had any problems since.
If you have AOL software on your computer, the first step to a better web experience and a more trouble free computer is to remove it all.
@Tester How long has this been going on?
After being able to post for a couple of hours yesterday, I was again locked out when I hit the 'Post Comment" button…Today, so far so good…This exact same problem happened once before, about a month ago…Some strange little incompatibility somewhere…One thing I DID do yesterday and that was to download about 10 or 12 Windows (XP) updates…(I don’t do that automatically) Is THAT the issue?
@Caddyman I’m fairly certain your issue is Internet connection problems, so yes downloading updates all day could cause it.
