We put $2 dollars of diesel in gas engine but then filled the tank with regular unleaded fuel. Will this be enough to cause damage to the car?
Another one putting Diesel in a gas vehicle !
I guess if you call the dealer your warranty coverage might be voided . An independent shop would most likely want to drain the fuel tank and flush the lines. But they also might report the service to Carfax or some other site. Maybe if you have driven it and it seems to run and the check engine light is not on just keep adding fresh fuel ( the proper kind of course ) at the 3/4 full mark for several weeks.
Any chance you might tell us how this happened ?

Are you dreaming again?
Yeah, please tell us more about how you got it in and also, what happened afterward.
That sounds like less than a gallon of diesel. I do not know that anyone can give you a guaranteed response. My car I would drive it for a long drive, see how it goes and keep putting in good gas as possible. That would be in my car, Proactive have someone drain the tank and start over with fresh. You would not believe how many questions we get on this error. Call the dealer who takes care of the warranty and see what they say, but remain anonymous.
There is no question that the owner of a new, fully-warrantied vehicle wants to remain anonymous with the dealership in regard to this situation, but because of Caller I.D., he might not be able to retain his anonymity with the dealership.
Why did you stop at $2? Common sense?
Appreciate it. I spoke with my mechanic friend and he said we would be ok if we only put $2 worth of Diesel and filled rest of tank up. We shall see. Thank You

The tank holds about 20 gallons, US average for diesel is $3.00 a gallon. @ $2.00 you put less than a gallon in. Your mechanic friend is correct no worries. Kudos to the attendant for catching it, BUT please tell us how she got the diesel nozzle to fit.
I’ll repeat this again.
If the nozzle on a diesel pump fails, and there’s no replacement diesel nozzle, a gas station will install a gas nozzle instead until a diesel nozzle is acquired.
That’s how this happens.

Good question. I will ask my Daughter.

I do believe this is a 1st some one actually told us how it happened.
I’ve heard of that happening at some podunk little station but any name-brand major operator would never be so stupid. Having been a service station manager and then an owner/operator there’s no way I would ever take the risk of someone putting diesel in a gas car because the wrong nozzle was on the dispenser. Also a gas nozzle costs twice as much as a diesel nozzle and the diesel may gum up the gas nozzle. So it’s a lose/lose situation.
Now having said that, more than once I had the pleasure of pushing a car off the gas islands and into the shop to drain the diesel that someone put in the tank. You would be surprised at the number of people who patiently stand there for 20 minutes trickling fuel into the filler neck because the nozzle doesn’t fit.
The nozzle doesn’t need to fit, they hold the nozzle against the opening and pump.
As for having the wrong nozzle on the diesel pump, no convenience store clerk is going to attempt to replace one, they call a maintenance company for this. We have a pump on the property and always call a specialist for repairs. We also don’t repair our lifts in the shop or hose retractors, we rely on a mechanical engineering company for that.
Easily, not actually reading the pump, checking those all important social media accounts. The list goes on.
I really strongly suggest that the OP remove all that personal info, real name, address, etc.
BTW you live almost next door to my younger brother.
Careful , Texas . Every time I suggest someone edit their personal info I get Slammed
That could be Alabama or Tennessee. Is he on the forum?
Would somebody please explain to me how this was done? Yes the nozzles are two different sizes and if you try to put diesel in it it’ll probably splashed back all over you. I had a customer one time put about 10 gallons of diesel in his 22 gallon tank, we filled it with gas the rest of the way and he kept driving it and putting gas in it about every half tank and it was fine the only thing you did with the diesel was it would ping occasionally but finally it was fine with no long-term issues. The gentleman bought the truck new and got rid of it with about 150,000 miles on it, I worked on it the whole time that he had it so I would’ve seen something going wrong.
