World's Ugliest Car (in production)

The Fiat Multipla gets my vote!

Really. It looks like a mash-up of a car & a submarine!

May I suggest to include the Mercedes G Class.

Passed a Honda Element today and thought - what an ugly boxy car this is (this one was wrapped with plastic all around, including the very boring front and excluding the doors).

And, for my personal taste, the grills of the Lincoln MKZ and MKX are exaggerated, ridiculous and the most ugly ones!

I am driving a boring Hyundai Sonata 2006 - but have to admit other (older) Hyundais like the Tiburon or the Santa Fe are a shame design-wise. Well and taste may decide whether the latest Hyundai Sonata is beautiful or ugly. I don’t like it at all.

I agree the Fiat Multipla is the ugliest car after the Aztec, but both these cars are no longer built.

I’m sorry, but the new Camaro is hideous. http://www.chevrolet.com/camaro/

". . .to the cartoonish, asymmetrical windows"
Virgil Exner experimented with asymmetrical designs back in the early 1960’s. These assymetrical designs didn’t make it to production, but the 1962 Dodge and Plymouth full size cars as well as the Valiant and Lancer were rather far out.

I rather like the design of these cars (Nissan Cube, Scion xB, Honda Element). The design is functional in the amount of interior space present in the interior of these vehicles.

One truly streamlined automobile that quickly became a joke was the 1949-50 Nast Airflyte 600 and Ambassador models. These Nash models had a much lower coefficient of drag than the cars from the other U.S. manufacturers. They were comfortable cars for 6 passengers and the streamlining had a purpose.

One non-streamlined vehicle that came out right after WW II was the Jeep station wagon. It was probably the Nissan Cube/Honda Element of its day. Yet these Jeep wagons were very functional.

I think that the ugliest cars made were the 1959 GM products–particularly the Cadillac with its high fins. These GM products weren’t even very functional. I remember my Dad road tested a 1959 Buick–he was going to trade in his 1954 Buick. The seats were hard in the middle making this a 4 passenger car. I remember my Dad teling the salesman that “I’m not going to pay $3300 for a 4 passenger car”. We were happy to drive away in our 1954 Buick.

IMHO, if there isn’t a function to the design, the vehicle is ugly. I think some of the recent Chrysler products are ugly for that reason.

My vote goes for the Infiniti SUV line. The EX isn’t the worst, but the FX looks like its going to attack you. The QX is the topper though with a ball versus cube identity crisis.

Now, let’s just forget about the ugliness factor for a second and consider the originality factor. I’m going to bash Kia using pictures rather than words.

Exhibit A: Kia Optima vs. Honda Accord

Exhibit B: Kia Forte vs. Honda Civic

…Yeah. Let’s consider that for a second.

If you think the CTS and Charger are ugly, you should check out some ugly cars of days gone by, like the Cord 810, or the boat-tail Auburn, and perhaps a 63 Corvette. Basically, you are a dope, and a poor judge of auto style. Oh, and checkout the E Type Jag if you want a laugh with those who think alike.

I’m with you Waterboy. The Nissan Cube looks like a HS design contest gone bad. Next worst is the Mazda 3 imo.

Hear! Hear! As I have mentioned before, I travel a lot and get to rent lots and lots of cars. Part of the fun is to play rental-car roulette. I once drove a Magnumm for a weekend and returned it vowing to never drive one again. It’s like being at the head of a barge. I much favored the Dodge Caliber.

Oh, I don’t know. The Peugeot 407 is really nice. 'Course, it was sculpted by an Italian, so there you go.

I agree. The Nissan Cube is the ugliest design I have seen in recent years. However I disagree with about the Juke. The more I look it at the more I like it. I think the Juke will turn out to be a success.

The PT Cruiser (which I first saw in France, of all places, in 2000) was based on the 1934 Chrysler Airflow, Chrysler’s first “streamlined” car, which I’m told was then rated the ugliest car on the road. Ford followed suit a few years later. The PT would have been a pre-Mini mini, and maybe even a fun car, if Chrysler didn’t just slap a body on a Neon platform that was underpowered and overweight. It was a miserable car to drive, with gas mileage nowhere near what it should have been.

I still have to vote for the Juke, assuming we’re limited to production, currently for sale as new in the USA. The Rhodius and the Multipla are certainly in the World Cup running. By the way, how did the marketing people ever pick the name “Juke”? Here’s what Wikipedia says about the word:

"The term ?juke? may be derived from the Gullah word “juke” or “joog” meaning disorderly, rowdy, or wicked.

Alternatively, the word ?juke? may be derived from the Jukes, a pseudonym for a family used as examples during the latter 19th century and early 20th century to argue that there was a genetic disposition toward anti-social behavior or low intelligence. The arguments were used to bolster advocacy of eugenics, or the pseudo-scientific breeding of human beings, by demonstrating that traits deemed socially inferior could be passed down from generation to generation."

The name says it all.

My choices are either the 2010 GMC Terrain (it looks like a tank; all it’s missing is a turret), or the Lincoln Navigator (what they did with the grill is downright hideous). I’m not a fan of full-sized SUVs anyway, but at least try to add some style to them.

Subaru Baja

I had forgotten about this mess. yes, much worse.

Only thing worse than a Juke is a modified one:

The Juke lights look funky, but get a little cool after knowing they were styled after an alligator’s eyes!
