For several months, our SRS (air bag) light has been on in our 1997 Civic. The dealer said it might be the ignition lock, and we just paid $440 to have it replaced. The light is still on. Did we get taken? Are these SRS systems so hard to diagnose?

If you brought in your car just to fix the SRS sytem and it was not fixed, then yes! you were taken. The dimwit mechanic was just throwing parts at your car.

Diagnosing the SRS is not for the shadetree mechanic because one needs a special scanner instrument to read the codes stored in its controller. But a well-equipped shop will have such a scanner. You need to ask around to find a capable independent shop.
