Is it really needed?

Hi,

My Dodge Ram 2500 4WD steering has a damper that’s worn out. Does this damper have a safety or durability function or is just there for “Feel”? Thanks

Karl

If the truck was manufactured 1996 or earlier, probably. Production began in 1994, so that’s not much of range. If so, the damper is not the only part that needs replacing. See the parts list included in this Dodge bulletin:
http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1996/19-05-96.htm.
I found this bulletin online via:

The titled symptom, a sustained shimmy after hitting a pothole or bump, would be the litmus test if this is your problem.
It’s unclear if this is a recall situation or just a procedural memo to Dodge dealerships’ service departments.
If not 94-96, then what year, what symptoms, who is telling you that you need a new damper?
