Remember Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman who pretended to continue to go to work long after he had lost his job?
@bing. I have always had a hard time watching the movie āDeath of a Salesmanā and seeing the demise of Willy Loman. I saw Willy Loman in some of my colleagues when I was a faculty member at a university. I put in my papers for retirement while I was in top of my game. I miss working with students, but the culture of the institution changed. When I started my career in 1965, the mission of the university was to educate the next generation. Todayās mission is to bring in grant money to support the parasites living off education. Like Willy, I found it more and more difficult to adapt to the new model.
Yeah itās a tough life. One of the first guys I worked for used to tell me how he would go around the block several times before getting enough courage to make a sales call for sporting goods at a high school. Another one of my sales managers said once a month he had to go out of our territory and get stinking drunk to clear his mind. Man I thought who needs this kind of life? After Iād quit, a couple years later he had the nerve to try and recruit me again.
I too think I retired at the right time. Iām not sure if its just me or if the organisations changed dramatically. All I know is it used to be a few dedicated people putting programs together with little money and sheer determination for the public good. Now it takes ten people to replace one with starting pay near the top and seems like its mostly feel good issues and little real accomplishments. I always tried to shoot straight, focus on economy and results, but the new folks look at you like you have three eyes. In college it was a focus on always searching for the real truth, but now it seems like truth be danged, donāt offend anyone with questions.
So pardon me if I seem to be less progressive than others, but frankly I donāt trust these folks.
