Fuel Smell

I have a 1999 Grand Am and every time I come to a stop light/stop sign and even sometimes while it is idling waiting for someone to get in my car, we smell an odor that smells like fuel. Sometimes it is so strong that we have to roll the window down. I’m learning to just shot off the a/c or heat when I at a light so that I don’t smell it. What is happening and what can I do on my own to correct it? I will need specific instructions since I don’t know much about cars.

I suspect you have a fuel line leak or maybe a fuel pressure regulator leak. Do you have a hard time starting the engine after it has sat (off) for a little while?

This will be a fire hazard if fuel drips onto a hot exhaust.

Take it to a reputable shop and have it fixed.
