Fuel filter quick disconnect

I have a '97 Pontiac Sunfire and I’m trying to change the fuel filter. I can’t figure out how I’m supposed to remove the quick disconnect. The fuel line fits over the filter tube with a black plastic piece surrounding everything. I’ve read online that I should be able to just squeeze the connector, but I squeeze and squeeze and nothing seems to let me get the line off.

Is the black plastic part of the filter or part of the fuel line? I’m not sure if I should be squeezing the connector with one hand and pulling the line with the other or what.

Any tips are highly appreciated. Thanks.

Here are some pictures to show what I’m talking about. BTW, I forgot to mention that my new filter doesn’t have this black plastic connector piece. Sorry for the blurred pics… I took them with my cell phone.

Squeeze the tabs, and don’t be afraid to yank the line off the fuel filter. But be ready to be splashed with gas.

I’ve only managed to budge the black tabs when squeezing on the tip with a pair of pliers. Are the tabs connected to the fuel line or to the filter?
