Exhaust system was running loud and mechanic showed me that pipe midway between tailpipe and engine was rusted and would need replacement. While driving at night, heard something fall off on highway. Car still loud but not as loud. Tailpipe still on. Is it safe to drive if midpipe missing until can get fixed?
Somebody will have to look at it.
Take it to a good independent exhaust shop (preferably one with welded “art” out front) and they should be able to repair just that one part unless everything else is totally rusted out.
It depends on what mid-pipe you’re talking about, but generally if it’s a pipe before the catalytic converter you need to get it fixed. Even if not, it’d probably be a good idea to fix it anyways before you get a ticket for it.

You do know that the exhaust gas you are exposed to are deadly, don’t you? Make certain that you keep your window open when the engine is running. Take the vehicle back to the mechanic who showed you the rusted pipe and ask him to replace the parts you need to make this vehicle safe to drive. The noise is not nearly so bad as the exhaust you are exposing yourself to as you drive. Rocketman
