I have a 99 Saturn SL2. The emergancy brake handle will not lock when pulled up. Brake seems to work ok when pulling the handle, but if you let go it pops back down emmediatley and lets go. Does the handle need to be replaced? Or is it something else?
These hand brakes have a half moon set of detents that lock the brake in place when you pull up. If you hear no clicking when you pull up, the odds are the spring operated release is not letting go of the pin that provides pressure to hold the handle at the detent chosen.
Don’t know if I made myself clear, but taking a good look at the brake handle and associated parts will tell you which piece may be defective. It may be easiest to take the car to a mechanic who has some knowledge of these items, rather than try to figure out how to repair.
