I do. Fall, 1964. Neighbor drove one through the neighborhood on a test drive. 60 year anniversary soon.
I remember seeing my first Mustang at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.
A friends dad owned the ford garage so we always got a preview of the new models.
Nope, they have always been around my whole life…
But I do remember the 1st one I worked on, it was a 65 and I was 19-20 and I did a 4, wheel backing plate out, brake job and front bearings and seals, and ran out of gas on the test drive to the gas station… lol
Did some other stuff to it but don’t remember the details, but I got paid for the work, from my garage at home… worked on 3 or 4 vehicles they owned…
Saw a 65 I recall. loved my 68 cougar so much better!
Yes, I remember when the Fox Body Mustangs were everywhere, and young people bought them as cheap used cars. Nowadays, a Fox Body that runs is as rare as a hen’s tooth, and equally expensive.
In late 1964 my dad brought home a 64 Mustang convertible that belonged to a friend. Got to ride around in it with the top down.
They still are, that everywhere just happens to be at all the drag tracks… lol
The Fox body and then the SN95 are factory drag cars just waiting to be released, they have factory 4 link rear suspensions and are very light weight for V8 muscle cars… Slap a built small block Chevy with a lot of N2O (with proper safety equipment) and you are doing 130+ mph in the standing 1/8 mile…
First time I actually recall seeing the Mustang was around 1970-1, I wasn’t terribly impressed. But then again my dad was driving a 1969 Olds 442 convertible at the time.
I loved the sequential rear tirn signals on those Cougars
The new mustangs have adopted them, but the fold up head light cover is not in the mix. It was like music, the tail turn signals. Badoomp Badoomp Badoomp!
I don’t remember the first Mustang I saw, but I do remember the day the issue of Road & Track showed up in the mail with 2 all new Jaguar XK-E’s on the cover.
No, but they were all over the press. I was in high school and spent some time in the school library looking at the spec and cost data on Mustangs, trying to see how much a low end model would cost, and wondering how anybody made that kind of money! I was16.
I don’t recall when I first saw the new Mustang, but I suspect that it was in the local Ford dealer’s showroom. They had some sort of raffle to win a prize, and I won a scale model of a Mustang. I still have it!
Too bad it wasn’t 1:1
My Dad’s pride and joy was a 1968 coupe.
It ended up like most did- rust dust.
I think that was the top prize. My scale model was probably the last prize.
Friends, who lived in Cincinnati, won a Mustang from Kroger’s. I think that the grocery chain was giving away 50 or so Mustangs, and they were lucky enough to win one of them. Of course, it had a six-cylinder engine and 3-speed manual trans, but they liked it and drove it for many years.
Maybe the same as in my friend’s folks white Falcon convertible.
My Dad picked up a 66 Mustang with a 4spd/289 when he was stationed at McGuire AFB in '68. My first memories of the US as we had been overseas for a few years. Friend picked up a '68 Cougar in HS (~78?), beautiful car. I bought a new 83 Mustang GT (5spd/302-4V) with my first real paycheck. Big step up from my 67 VW.

If memory serves me right I sat in one on a ride at the Ford pavilion at the 1964 Worlds Fair.
I used to sneak in through a secluded cut in the fence under a highway overpass. Fun times.
I think the first Mustang sightings at the 1964 World’s Fair have to take the “solution” prize. Two posters said so, but since there is only one “solution” possible, it goes to the first, @old_mopar_guy … congrats, thanks for the memory! And to @jimkoe329_179295, your story about sneaking through a hole in the fence to attend the fair is pretty funny! I only went to one world’s fair, early 60’s Seattle.
