Clicking, overheating & stalling

We have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cheokee with 96k mi…

When you accelerate the engine it makes a clicking spitting like noise and if you take your foot off the gas it will stall. It do this even when the tempature is normal but it is also overheating…

It seems like a serious and expensive problem…I told my wife not to even drive the car until we can pay a mechanic to look at it…My question is what could possibly be the problem The fan belt and pulley’s seem to be working ok and I topped off the coolant.

Hard to tell from your post, but it sounds like it could be a severe misfire. Is the “Check Engine” light on? If so (and I’ll bet it is), there will be one or more diagnostic trouble codes stored that will help pinpoint the problem. Can you drive it at all without the problem occurring? If not, it would be wise not to drive it.
