Chip got "locked" in 2007 Dodge Ram

Here is something that happened recently and a question on how to avoid it.

A couple nights ago my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 wouldn’t start. Battery and everything was fine. But the starter would not engage at all.

After being towed home I tried my wife’s key with the remote opener to unlock the doors. Her remote no longer worked on the doors and her key also would not start the truck.

Suspecting the chip in the truck that synches up with the remote and the keys was the problem, I disconnected the negative battery terminal to try and reset the chip. That worked.

Question: has anyone ever had this happen to them and the chip in the vehicle got “locked” and had to be reset? And does anyone know what could cause this and how to prevent it?
