CarTalk redirecting me to a virus website?

Have you tried using Duck Duck Go?? NO ads…

Sounds to me like NO ads = NO problems… just saying…

Unless you are using a work devise… I have not seen an ad on Car Talk since Sep of 2024…

And I use Google Chrome for everything else I do on line… DDG just for Car Talk…

A different browser, I assume?

Stating that is telling.

I’m not understanding your question other than what I already said… Read my whole post, pretty sure it will answer your question… maybe… lol

My only current issues with the CarTalk Community site operability are, and they pertain mainly to mobile devices (tablet, phone):

  1. The up and down motion of the conversation on screen, forcing me to counter-scroll, and-or having to keep my finger on the screen to read a specific poster’s contribution.
  2. The pop-up video ads which appear mostly in the lower right-hand corner of desktop and mobile devices.

Let me expand in a separate paragraph about item #2:

After a 5-second countdown during the ad playing, a small black box with white lettering ‘Skip Ad” appears.

Invariably - and again this happens only on the aforementioned phone and tablet - tapping Skip Ad nearly always takes me to the product vendor site vs. CLOSING the ad, which we all learned decades ago: both an ‘X’ or ‘Skip’ means Close.

However, I have discerned the provider/producer of these ads, it is Innovid, so I suggest we all get on their backs instead of on the backs of CarTalk administration. It’s Innovid’s designers that need a reminder of what X and Close or Skip are supposed to do - when either a finger or mouse cursor touches them.

This does not happen on my laptop, to which I have a mouse attached, where it is easy for a single-point arrow to close the annoying content.

Have you tried both clearing your browser’s cache, and deleting all cookies, and then rebooting?

Here’s what ChapGPT recommends for this:

  1. Settings→Safari→Advanced→Website Data→Remove All Website Data
  2. Settings→Safari→Clear History and Website Data (will log you out of sites)
  3. Settings→Safari→Notifications: Then disable “Allow Notifications”. This will stop websites from sending notification popups like the ones you saw.
  4. Then remove any configuration profile that looks suspicious to you or that you didn’t install, that can reroute traffic or change browser behavior: Go to Settings→General→VPN & Device Management (or Profiles). If you see a configuration profile that you didn’t intentionally install, then delete it.
  5. Disable Pop-Ups and Fraudulent Website warings by going to: Settings→Safari and ensure these four are turned ON.
    1. a Block Pop-ups
    2. Fraudulent Website Warning
    3. Prevent Cross-Site Tracking
    4. Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement
  6. Check for Suspicious App or VPN Activity by going to Settings→General→VPN & Device Management. Then remove any unknown VPNs. Review installed apps and delete any that you don’t recognize.

While I don’t have an iPhone, I do similar steps on my Android and laptop. Before you can expect anything from the CarTalk folks, you should at least do the above to on your end.

Try that and see if it clears up

I’ve already traced the pop-up ads to Innovid, so I’ll be contacting them with basic info like “Skip” means close.

As far as the up/down gyrations of the site on mobiles, I’m not sure what is causing that, ads or otherwise.

I use DDG, so no need to waste my time to contact an ad pop up company to explain anything… again ZERO ads since I went over to DDG in September 2024…

And no jumping up/down since going over to the evil dark side of DDG either… lol

Community is not the only forums I frequent. DriveAccord, Automotove forums, etc.

And those sites don’t up/down like CarTalk does, despite having ads in the corners or at top and bottom..

I’m not about to start using different browsers and engines on my phone for different forums sites.

Yes, JoeMario. I have done all those steps with Apple technician’s assistance.

These are what I did so far:

  1. Deleted history and data in safari
  2. Reset network settings.
  3. Hard restart of the iPhone device
  4. Rebooted WiFi router
  5. Updated IOS
  6. Scanned for viruses ( though Apple said there are no known antivirus softwares that work for Apple despite what other vendors claim.

Still, the issue persisted

I haven’t switched to another browser because I find that my activity is limited with those browsers

Also, I try not to download 3rd party apps on my device

OK, the reason your screen is jumping is because of the ads between the post are different heights, so if you have NO ads, then you have NO jumping… That jumping was the straw that broke the camels back for me…

I am on other forums also… I ONLY use DDG for Car Talk…
I find that the inconvenience of ads popping up and my screen jumping far out weights the inconvenience of using a separate browser, so pick the one that is the least inconvenient to you…

It’s like this, if you keep having to add air to only one tire daily then you will do basically one of 3 things, repair it, replace it or keep adding air to it, and if you choose to keeping adding air to it after being offered a free fix, then that is your problem and you will have to keep adding air to it…

BTW, others use ad blockers, so if you are using your personal non public/work devise and still having ads, then that is on you and you should STOP complaining about it…

90% of what I do is on DDG, there is only one utility company that somehow requires a different browser to pay my bill all other bills are paid on DDG.

I agree this is a tough one.
One low probability but easy to test idea is to turn off your router making your phone go directly to your provider’s towers. Then see if the problem still exists.

Routers can be hacked, and this is one way to bypass it to test it.

It’s a low probability ,but it’s easy to test.

Yes. I tried using data only rather than WiFi and the issue still persists.

Apple believes the problem is with this site rather than with my device since the issue doesn’t happen anywhere else.

But no one else has this problem, hard to understand how it’s coming from the site.

Interesting but you still get here somehow. There may come a time when they will just take your phone back and suggest you might have better luck elsewhere. Never want to be a pest.

+1
If this site was the source, more than just one person would be reporting this problem.

I use an old tablet when I am away from a computer. This morning a full screen ad with a character looking like Marvin the Martian locked the screen. This tablet has no capacity for a new browser so I got used to closing Car Talk every minute or two.

Closing the tab/browser works for many people, then visit a different site. There are only 21 active members during the last 7 days with 5 or more posts, most members have given up on this forum.

You’d be correct if people were using an iPhone.

I’m currently awaiting a family member to loan me their Apple phone so I can use it to test here.

Majority of the members here reported using a windows desktop and a different browser.

I come here because I’ve received great help from you and some other members here.

Over at Lexus forum they have ads but their ads have never caused problems for me. It is only on this forum the ads are acting like they want to physically push me. lol.

And safari is enabled to block ads and pop ups, yet I face the ongoing problems still
