Well that’s beyond me. Maybe @Tester has an idea why it would lock up. Otherwise you are going to have to trust the shop a little.
Maybe the front wheel hub bearing was what was grinding and it just happened to lock up after you parked.
With the rear wheels chocked, jack the left front up just enough to get the tire off the ground. Try to rotate it while noting if the CV shaft also turns.
Another possibility is that someone botched your brake job, a pad got chewed up prematurely, and the brakes are now seized on the left front.
If that left front wheel won’t turn I would support the car on something sturdy and remove that left front wheel for a look see.
ok so today I went and jacked the car and tried to move the left front wheel, I had to put the parking break on since I was on a incline. The wheel barely moved, and it only moved a little to the left and a little to the right. cv shaft also moved with the wheel and as I moved left and right it was clunking, almost as if it couldn’t move any further. Unfortunately I could not remove the wheel Because I was on an incline and was scared the car would move forward when the car was jacked up. I also tried to move the cv shaft to see if there was any play and I couldn’t feel any, I am completely baffled at what is going on. I did another test to see if the car would go forward in neutral and the body of the car would move and the wheels would be locked in place it didn’t matter if the car was on or off. I am not sure what is going on but tomorrow I am going to see a mechanic shop that has good reviews and get their opinion, then If I feel I can trust them I’ll tow the car over and get it fixed. I’ll keep you guys informed in case anyone else is having this problem or if you generally want to know what was wrong, hopeful it isn’t the transmission or something expensive.
So the wheel won’t turn? Think you’re down to a seized bearing or locked up transmission.
Getting the shop’s opinion on what could be wrong without having the car there may be a big waste of time. Why not have it towed there before you go over, so that they can give you an informed opinion?
Seeing as my car can’t move I would be in an awkward position if I just towed the car there without having some idea of what needs to be fixed or what the problem could be.
Where both front wheels off the ground? Transmission in neutral?
yea no I didn’t put the car in neutral, mostly because I was scared the car would roll on the back wheels(which it did but thankfully stopped before going down the incline) I also only lifted one wheel.
Your inspection only proved that “Park” is working. If you want to rotate one of the front wheels with the other on the ground you need to take the vehicle out of park.
Ok ill do that tomorrow i just came up with a good way to make sure the car won’t roll. What exactly should I be looking for when doing this?
If the wheel will rotate after shifting from park it suggests that the gear selector cable is ok and the transmission has failed.
I’m going to punch out on this one and am no help but I thought you said the car would not move when you tried to push it? Now it started to roll down the incline? So I’m lost. Yeah parking brake is on rear wheels and Park is on front wheels. Front wheel won’t turn if its in park. I think its best just to have someone look at it. Explaining the symptoms will likely just confuse them.
Yes the car started to move but stopped suddenly not sure if the parking brake stopped it or if it was the jack but it didn’t roll much probably an inch. I’m just gonna do what Nevada suggested and also see if its the brakes too.
Are you not in an awkward position now?
Shops deal all the time with customers that don’t know exactly what is wrong with their vehicle. Unfortunately, some shops will take advantage of that, but many will not. Make sure where you are going is trusted, and recommended by people you know.
Ok so I jacked up the car, put it in neutral and tried to move it, it did same thing it did yesterday no change whatsoever. I think its the brakes, ill get the car towed to a shop tomorrow and see what it is.
Is it possible that the broken transmission mount is causing problems with the shift linkage/cable, or that the cable may have broken and it is stuck in park? When it is in drive or reverse, and you apply gas, does the engine seem to lug as if you were trying to move with the brakes on, or does it rev freely?
Another thought: if the wheel and CV shaft moves at all, doesn’t that indicate that the brakes are not seized (at least on that corner)
Ok so I already checked the shif-linkage cable and i saw that it moves as I changed each gear. Now when I first put the car into gear it tries to move when I first press the gas but then it just revs freely. I think it could be that the broken transmission mount my have cause something to go wrong with the transmission but I don’t know. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the car towed today so ill have to wait until tomorrow to find out. I still think the brakes could be bad, and it might just need more fluid. There are just too many possibilities.
Lack of brake fluid is not the problem. I would (very carefully) try to take a look at the back side of that brake rotor or reach underneath and drag a finger over the surface to see if it feels chewed up.
Some years back I was in a tire store getting new tires and they had a mangled brake rotor hanging from the wall. I asked the counter guy if someone actually came in with that rotor and he said yes. The brakes had gotten chewed up so badly the caliper piston jammed into the cooling vanes after shredding the back side of the rotor. That locked the wheel up instantly.
Did the female driver stop? Not a chance. She drove that Chevy 8 blocks to the tire store while skidding the LF tire on the pavement all the way. At the end of that 8 block long skid mark the smoking tire blew out just as she entered the parking lot.
Matter of fact, the counter guy pointed out the skid mark which was still present 6 months later.
Went to shop today and they told me that the transmission was locked up and that I needed to put in a new transmission. Went ahead and did it since I don’t really have any other options. Here’s a list of codes they got when they scanned it of anyone has something they want to add on.
Codes are one thing but transmission hard parts inside is what requires overhauling. Maybe some of those codes relate to that, I dunno. If you want to see what is involved in a trans overhaul, you can look at some of the Precision Transmission videos on Youtube.
