maybe Car Talk should have a…Anything Goes section. Testers thread hacking finger is getting tired. LOL
They do.
It’s called General Discussion.

I thought that was just for general automotive discussion. like waxing or leather cleaning, ect
You can talk about anything in general.

If you look at the posts, you will see that it appears most people simply ignore the various topic titles when viewing or replying. Some have never been used since they were established. Some are so narrow to be ludicrous.
Best to just reply to what you want and ignore the rest, just like you should ignore someone who parks over the line in the parking lot instead of getting all upset about it.
A guy asked a question about his car so you feel it is reasonable to tell him about your snow blower and wood glue?
Well like said before, seems likely to wander a little after 40 responses to “should I change my oil”.
Absolutely, and not just through the top. Moist air will diffuse through any plastic. DoD stores solid rocket motors in bags made up of alternating layers of polyethylene and aluminum foil. Three layers of polyethylene separated by two layers of aluminum foil IIRC. These motors need to be stored for a decade or more, and need extreme measures to remain dry. Even then, some moisture gets through the edges where the bags are heat sealed.
Air will pass (or leach) through the side of a plastic motor oil bottle? I did not know that. It’s got to be a tiny amount of air over a long period I guess.
It is a low rate, but it happens every second of the day.
They used to have a “Rant and Rave” section that was a lot fun, but there was a tendency of trolls to infiltrate it and get abusive from time to time. I guess that is why they deleted it.
The aluminum foil was to prevent accidental ignition of the rocket motor by ESD (electrostatic discharge).
You only need one layer of aluminum foil on the inside to drain static charge. The other layers were there to reduce moisture intrusion.
My mistake, not just ESD but also EMI and you do need two layers. The aluminum foil does double duty as a moisture barrier but I believe at least one layer of the poly also is carbon impregnated to absorb the currents generated by EMI. Sort of a dummy load.
I wonder if the OP needs a car cover with lightning protection.
Not the ones I saw. I worked on a project to help the Navy choose an improved moisture barrier for SRMs 20 years ago. There likely have been improvements since then.
That’s odd. The Navy has been pretty OCD when it comes to ESD/EMI protection, at least since the early 80’s. Too much is not enough.
I’m a materials engineer and they may have used EEs for the issues you mentioned. They just asked us to evaluate moisture diffusion. I worked in a research lab at the time.
I bought a Honda Accord years ago and was told to not go especially go passed the first oil change.
Which was just a few thousand miles. What I found out then was that the oil from the factory comes with an additive. I was told that it has had a slight abrasive quality.
That sounds crazy to put in oil but Honda says that this additive is very important as it very slightly wears open the cylinder sleeve by a tiny fraction so the piston will now move more freely.
And why you must remove it at a specific mileage. Failure to do so and you could cause them to be too large which could lead to oil burn in the long run.
This was the 2004 Accord 2,4 i4 engine btw.
No…It’s an anti-wear additive. Honda makes some extremely durable engines. We’ve owned 2 accords that lasted well past 300k miles with ZERO engine problems. One we gave to our Niece she started college and she sold it after she got established in her first job - the Accord had over 400k miles. How many miles do you expect to get out of this Accord.
Follow the maintenance schedule and chances are you’ll get a long long life of happy motoring.
