2021 Jeep Renegade - Buying

I just purchased a used 2021 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk is there ANYTHING I should know before I commit to this purchase. Thanks In advance.

Just understand that you are NOT buying a real Jeep, yours is basically a Fiat drivelineā€¦

I would not buy anything from Mopar since the Fiat merge, or most of the Mercedes Benz fused Moparā€™s except for the Hemiā€™s which Fiat Killedā€¦ They have been having lots of issues for years nowā€¦

I am an old school Mopar guy, and I love the 3rd gen Hemi Challengers/Chargers and even the Jeeps with a Hemi in them, but not the new Fiat stuffā€¦ Sorryā€¦

ā€œItā€™s a jeep thingā€ whenever a problem comes up.

If you did purchase this vehicle then you are already commited .

There was a recall issued July 3, 2024 for the air bag deployment. You can read more at NHTSA.gov. Click on the ā€˜recallā€™ button at the top and enter your VIN at the prompt. Hit enter and it will tell you if your Renegade is part of the recall and whether it was fixed yet. If you bought this SUV from a dealer, they canā€™t sell it without addressing the recall IIRC. Since itā€™s only been 2 months since the recall was issued I doubt the air bags were fixed.

I wouldnā€™t consider buying one. Consumer Reports lists 9 ā€˜Subcompact SUVsā€™. The Jeep is last, with ā€˜Much Worse than Averageā€™ Owner Satisfaction and ā€˜Worse than Averageā€™ reliability, along with the lowest road test score of all 9. Six of the 9 are recommended, pick one of them: Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30. Avoid the Jeep.

Dave beat me to it!
The ā€œJeepā€ Renegade is essentially a re-bodied Fiat 500X. The Fiat is no longer sold in the US because of very poor sales figures, and I believe those very poor sales numbers to be the result of Fiatā€™s well-earned reputation for overall poor quality and extremely bad electrical/electronic systems.

If the OP wouldnā€™t buy a Fiat, then he shouldnā€™t buy a ā€œJeepā€ Renegade, which is made on the same assemblyline in Melfi, Italyā€“alongside its Fiat 500X twin.

But, as Volvo-V70 already statedā€¦

I donā€™t understand. How could you purchase the vehicle yet not yet commit to purchasing it? Are you saying the seller is allowing you to return it if you want?

Iā€™m not aware of any specific reason myself why you should return it to the seller. If you like it, keep it. Any vehicle you buy will eventually have some issues. When you have a specific issue you are welcome to post it here for some ideas. Beyond that, searching through the various car repair and maintenance internet forums seems like your best strategy, general google search, forum specific searches, etc.

Would you buy a new-ish Fiat, George?

Iā€™m not looking for a new vehicle myself. Iā€™m happy with the ones I already own.

Iā€™m going to take the OP at their word. They asked about committing to the purchase, not about returning a purchased vehicle, to which I say no way Iā€™d buy one of those.

Agree with all the other comments.

Once while traveling for work, I rented a Renegade to drive around (it was what my company paid for). It was difficult to see out of, for me, in terms of driving, changing lanes, etc. Seems like it also used a lot of gas, more that I would have expected for a smallish vehicle. I didnā€™t enjoy the experience.

In Jeepā€™s global expansion plans, the subcompact Renegade and the even smaller Avenger (an all-electric Jeep not sold in the United States) are tailored for Europe and Asia. Jeepā€™s image in the U.S. requires something more rugged or luxurious and the Renegade (falls) outside of those parameters.Jan 26, 2024
Does it have a warranty? Youā€™ll need it.

Okay.

Yes. Time travel can be tricky. Iā€™m not sure how you can already purchase this vehicle, yet youā€™re asking questions about what to be aware of before you commit to purchasing this vehicle. Itā€™s a paradox.

But actually, yes, you have reason for concern. The Renegade, as others have pointed out is a glorified Fiat. Itā€™s not known for reliability or stellar build quaility. If youā€™ve already bought it, then good luck, and keep about $1500 stashed away for a random repair. If you havenā€™t already bought it, then unless youā€™re getting an absolutely killer deal, you may want to reconsider.

Thatā€™s all true, but our friendā€“Georgeā€“seems to think it is a desirable vehicle.

Is Cherokee any better than a renegade? For issues?

In the most recent Mission Impossible movie, Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) escaped the bad guys by driving a Fiat 500.

Were the bad guys driving an old VW Beetle?

Was there an LS engine amidship? Itā€™s a movie. Why do you think anything is real?

Car Parts . Com says

The Fiat 500 is generally considered a reliable car. It has above-average reliability ratings from RepairPal and J.D. Power, scoring a 3.5 out of 5.0 and 70/100, respectively.
