2017 Chevy Colorado steering wheel noise

Truck has begun making a small noise (sounds like tunk/clunk?) when I turn the steering wheel back and forth across the twelve o clock mark. This happens at low speed when the truck is running and while parked. Maybe I just can’t hear it at high speeds or I’m not not turning the steering wheel enough to make the noise when at high speeds? Any thoughts? Thanks!

The attached mp3 is me wiggling the steering wheel slightly back and forth while parked and the engine off. The same noise happens while driving at low speeds but not as frequently because I’m not turning the wheel as much. Sounds like it’s coming from the steering column. Thanks again.

I had the same type noise on my Avalanche. There is an intermediate shaft between the column and steering rack that can expand and collapse. Remove one end and slide it in an out to spread the grease inside around. Reattch it. The noise should be gone.

A good percentage of 2011-13 Hyundai Sonatas exhibited this clicking/ clunking sound when turning the wheel. Replacing a small rubber spacer/ gasket solved it.

When you turn the steering wheel there might be some mechanical interference between the moving part (the steering wheel ass’y) and the stationary part (the steering column). Next time you have a chance (car parked in the driveway, parking brake on), suggest to look in that area carefully (probably need to kneel beside the car with door open to see it) as you turn the steering wheel. Do the two surfaces look like they might be touching?

I take it you have not looked under the dash of many late model vehicles…

Here is the bottom of the column (what the OP would be looking at) with it out of the vehicle…

And on the Hyundai’s, the EPS motor is on the column, I am pretty sure the EPS motor for the Colorado is on the rack-n-pinion…
