2016 Hyundai Tucson - Transmission issues

transmission is not shifting well in low speeds
has a lag and a wabble when pressing on the gas peddle

Welcome, your Ask Someone question has been redirected to Car Talk…

What engine do you have, turbo??
Is it a FWD or AWD??
How many miles??

Hyundai’s dual clutch automatic transmission has its quirks. There are software updates and warranty extensions.

Perform a web search for “Hyundai Dual Clutch class action” and you will find some information.

A couple of days ago, I read that Hyundai is discontinuing their dual clutch transmissions, so I guess its fair to conclude that there must be an above average failure rate.

I guess we need to know what transmission you have??

A6MF1 (6 speed FWD/AWD automatic)
A6LF1 (6 speed FWD automatic)
A6LF2 (6 speed FWD/AWD automatic)

DCT (7 speed)

or possibly even the A8LF2 (8 speed automatic)

Act 7 speed

Slightly related to this, I had a Hyundai 5-speed manual, with a dual mass flywheel.

The dual mass flywheel began failing at 48k miles, well within the 100k warranty.
The springs inside the flywheel would shift causing the flywheel to expand, causing the clutch to never release.

Hyundai kept blaming me saying I didn’t know how to drive a manual trans.
I spent a lot of money going through the Lemon Law and small claims court. Hyundai always outspent me and crushed me with their legal maneuvers.

A mechanic at one of the Hyundai dealers I went to explained to me what was happening and that Hyundai knew about it. He saw the battle I was fighting (and losing). He gave me his cell phone number because he was worried about his losing job if management saw him talking to me about it.

In 2016, when I was trying to figure out the steering issues on my 2013 Sonata (steering would stick, or tug to one side or the other on highways), I called the dealer service dept to ask if the electric steering could be reprogrammed.

The Service advisor tried to inform me that my generation Sonata still had a conventional pump! On a generation of Sonata that was into its fourth model year. (I already knew it had electric steering)

He later relented, said sorry, you’re correct, bring it down and we can use OBDII to see what steering modes are available.

Now, I read that the dealer service said “you don’t know how to drive a manual”.

Is this a pattern Joe? Hyundai questioning the intelligence of its customers?

A different model & year Hyundai had a class action suit from the same problem. Hyundai blamed the premature failure on the owner’s driving habits and refused to cover any costs for replacement parts or for labor to repair the defect.

I remember reading a copy of the class action suit back then, where Hyundai lawyers argued to a judge in a San Francisco courtroom that those who joined the class action suit were not correctly using the clutch.
