2009 Chevrolet Impala key gets stuck

At different times when I turn off the ignition key it won’t go to lock & I can’t get the key out. It will turn off the motor but won’t go any farther so I have to mess with it to get the key to go to lock and sometimes it takes a while. at times I have let it sit for 5 minutes or so and then it will turn off. My local Chevy dealer has tried different things, changed out the shift mechanism, new battery, new key mechanism on steering column. Am I the only one in the U.S.A that has this problem? HELP!!! PLEASE!!

Did you try to rock the steering a bit to get the key out?

Does this model need any of the following:

  • Transmission in Park?
  • Parking brake set?
  • Brake pedal depressed?

For the transmission, try shifting out of Park and back. Try holding the lever firmly into the Park position. Also try moving it until it’s nearly in Reverse.

For the parking brake, try releasing it and FIRMLY resetting it.

For the brake pedal, try stepping on it REALLY hard.

When you figure out which of these it is, it should take only a simple adjustment (by someone who knows what he is doing) or possibly the replacement of an inexpensive switch.
