2004 Pontiac Grand Prix - rear window won’t go up or down

how to diagnose rear window won’t go up or down

Check the fuse first. If Ok, Check both switches for operation. If the window moves at all, it is a switch or wiring issue. If neither switch moves the window, remove the door panel and check for voltage at the window when the swifches are move. If there is voltage in the up and down switching, the regulator needs replacement.

An electrical motor and gears inside the door panel is what makes the window regulator (and window) go up and down. So either

  • the motor isn’t getting electrical power
  • the motor is getting proper electrical power, but has failed
  • the gears or regulator is stuck

Presuming OP has read & understands all the owner’s manual instructions for proper window switch operation, first step is to remove the inside door panel for a look-see. Let us know what you discover on first inspection. Never had power windows, but whenever I’ve had manually operated window problems it was always a fastener had come loose on the regulator.
