2002 Honda Odyssey - Shuts off

van cuts off while driving. when i go to start it back up if the green key doesn’t appear on the dash board it WILL NOT START! for at least 15 to 20 min. It randomly shuts off when ever it wants rather im at a stop light or driving 60 miles per hour on the free way. this is very dangerous for myself my husband and our grandchildren. when i turn the switch the green key appears then its good to go starting as if nothing ever happend. after it starts its only a matter of time without any warning it shuts off again. :frowning: SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! sincerely, hopeless in lakewood.

Do you have a CEL on the dash?? if so what are the codes?? if not try to see if any history or pending codes…

Lots of reasons a vehicle can shut off, more common is a crankshaft position sensor (crank sensor), you may also have a key that is not being recognized, try using a different key to see if the green key appears every time or not…

You might just need to take it to a shop that does diagnostics and let them find the issue…

Thanks for the response. There is no CEL on the dash. I really believe it is something with the immobilizer system. It does crank but it will not turn over. UNTIL that green key on the left side of the dash blinks about 4 times that means its ready to start back up. Ive been doing alot of researching on this issue. because this can be dangerous. It’s like a waiting game. when the car shuts down, I already know the drill. to try my best to pull over on the side of the road. hazards on…then its a waiting game. because if at this point when i go to try and crank it after it has shut itself down there is no green key that pops in to blink at me i know it wont start up. it just cranks and cranks but wont turn over. so i sit some more then maybe 15 to 20 minutes later i turn the key once , twice then all lights come on and BAM! the green key blinks at me like 4 times goes off then im able to crank my van right on up.

I do have all 3 honda original keys. I have changed the battery in the key fob. I will add this in…like 3 days after I purchased the van from a neighbor i misplaced my master key and key fob. shortly after that is when i started noticing odd behavior from my honda odyssey. like the back left sliding door would not allow me to control it, or passenger door wouldn’t lock by my driver conrols…odd little things like that. just wierd symptoms ya know. I remember a mercedes i had acting strange like that when i lost its key fob.

about a week ago a friend of mine asked me was i missing a set of keys, he had my keys i was super happy because by now the van has been shutting down on me. from my research and experience i was for sure the van would start back acting normal. but unfortunately this is not the case.

how can i tell if its the immobilizer? and its hard to believe i cant find anyone else that has had a honda with similar issues. Shouldn’t this be concerning or some sort of recall?
