2002 Chevy S-10 auto transmission problems

My great little S-10 (4cyl-177k) suddenly lost its reverse gear and now shifts hard between first and second. I would like to know what I have to look forward to repair-wise.

Very possibly a total rebuild will be necessary, especially if the fluid was not changed every 3 yrs/30k miles.

Take the truck to a local independent transmission shop for an evaluation of the trans. If you are really lucky, less involved repairs will be called for, but don’t be surprised if this 177k trans is in need of a total rebuild.

If you take it to a chain trans shop (AAMCO, Lee Myles, Cottman, Mr. Transmission, etc.), I can guarantee that you will be told that the trans needs to be rebuilt–even if that is not necessary.

That sounds realistic…what kind of $$ should I expect for a total rebuild?

$1,500.?
&2,000.?

To a great extent, it depends on what part of the country you reside in.

If you have lost reverse and your fluid level is good and the shift linkages are good, the trans will need to come apart.
