2001 Volvo S40 won't start

I’ve had this car since I bought it new in 2001. The engine has always taken a long time (like a second longer than any other car on earth) to start when I turn the key, that is, it doesn’t fire right away. I think it’s been taking longer and longer to catch the last few weeks. Yesterday, it failed to “catch” after a long “Rrrr Rrrr Rrrr”. After several attempts I gave up.

If the battery is 4 years old, or more, it’s tired. Retire it. Put in a fresh, young, one.

How many miles on the car? Has the fuel filter ever been replaced?
