2000 Volvo S40 with a randomly non-starting engine

I have an '00 Volvo S40 with less than 100,000 miles. It’s never given me a day of trouble, until recently.

This situation ONLY happens on short trips, like running errands. I’ll drive a short distance (say 5 miles) and be away from the car for about an hour.

When I try to start car after that, the engine doesn’t crank. It wheezes. The dashboard lights up, the radio will play, etc., but the engine doesn’t even make an attempt to turn over.

The situation resolves itself, but can be 10 mins or an hour. I can’t “make” this situation happen of course, so now, TWO mechanics now have no idea.

Anyone have thoughts?

I should mention that the battery is relatively new on this car, so I think it’s not that.

What components have your mechanics already given a “clean bill of health” sounds like some re-checking is in order.
