1997 Mercury Mystique

I have a 1997 Mercury Mystique. The “check engine” sign came on. I went to a mechanic shop. He told me that there is a “transmission range sensor” problem.

Symptom: When I press the lever, the rpm increases, but the actual car speed does not increase accordingly. I suspect that there might be a transmission problem.

Which test needs to be done to find out if it is the transmission problem?

That CEL (check engine light) is just a kid in class waving her hand trying to get you attention because she has the answer. You need to have the codes read. Some places will read them for FREE. Try Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. Get the exact code not just their translation into English and post it back here. It likely will have a format like P1234.

Thanks for your reply. The code is P0708.

If you don’t get a response by Tuesday try a new message and include the word transmission or transsman in the topic line. Sorry I am not very good at transmission issues.
