Maybe too late, but I’ll try anyway:
Geometry.
The Park Avenues from 1994-99 (you said “1988”, so this might not apply to yours) had a poorly-designed rail set that did not correctly match the window curvature. If you take your door panel off and watch the window travel up and down, you can see the entire track assembly straining in and out as it raises and lowers the glass.
