1984 Nissan 200SX is immobile

My '84 Nissan (5-speed manual transmission) exhibits the following symptoms:

(1) car is in nuetral. I start it and am unable to shift it into any gear (grinding noises when I try to do so)

(2) car is in gear. I push in the clutch and start it. Car lurches forward.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the clutch is not disengaging when you step on the clutch pedal. This is why you get the grinding noise (because you’re trying to engage 1st “without using the clutch”), and why the car lurches (because you’re trying to start the car “in gear.”)

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can tell you if you have a mechanical or cable-actuated clutch. I’d look for a failure in whatever actuation system your car uses. Does the clutch pedal depress with less force than usual?

Yes, the clutch pedal does depress with less force than usual. I noticed this phenomena but it really didn’t register.
