Your experience or knowledge about safelite glass auto shop

You didn’t mention any choices, I suspected you would have Safelite replace the windshield.

All the dealers I know around here do NOT do their own glass. It’s farmed out to one of the glass companies. I know a guy who got an estimate from Portland Glass and the Nissan dealer for a new windshield. The dealer was $50 more but he went with them. He was a little surprised and pissed to learn that Portland Glass installed the glass.

I’m thinking that the OP has forward collision avoidance and doesn’t know it.
Unless this car is very old (in which case you would not be talking warranty), it’s in all cars now.
And the XLE has rain sensing wipers (I have the same model).

Yes, looks like 2019 and newer are equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, includes lane keeping assist. Those features require a forward recognition camera located behind the windshield.

2021 Rav4 from his previous posts, all have Toyota Safety Sense for that year, Safelite will ask for the VIN or the licence plate to confirm which windshield is correct for that Rav4. There are several options for the Rav4 for that year but they can help navigate through the choices.

Let us know if you select full heat on the defrost vents in the winter and the new non OEM windshield cracks. If it cracks for this reason you are still covered, correct? I’ve seen it happen on non OEM replaced windshields. Is the windshield poor quality, or is it installed with excessive stress on the glass and it cracks, or both?

That is correct. I didn’t know this. Thanks for pointing this out. I will discuss this with the people installing the glass.

After reading your comment, I decided to call TOYOTA to ask about what you mentioned here. They agreed with you. I understand they work for Toyota and will most likely recommend Toyota OEM parts but I felt it was best to go with the OEM glass since my suv has forward sense feature as pointed out by some of the guys here.

Hopefully I don’t experience another rock. It’s my first time in my lifetime being hit by a rock and I plan to keep the suv well pass 200k miles. So I’ll be keeping it for a long time.

then definitely look into glass coverage with your insurance. It’d be silly not.to.

You can get OEM windshields from junk yards too. I’m told that on hot summer days the adhesive is easier to remove with the wire cutting tool.

I totally agree. With the cost of windshield glass and the proliferation of sensors and forward cameras, it’s almost silly not to have full glass coverage with no deductible. My coverage has paid for itself many times over due to ice and rock salt damage in the winter.

And I too have used Safelite on my cars, including ones with modern sensors for ADAS, and I have never had an issue. My only warning with them is they always try to add on wipers, even if I have recently changed them.

@Clueless33, please DON’T entertain getting a USED windshield (even if you could find a pro to install it), as that member is NOT known for given out good advise and should be one of the last members on this forum you should be taking advise from…

Your insurer will pay for the aftermarket windshield. You can get OEM glass but you will pay the difference between aftermarket and OEM. Also, note that Toyota probably buys the windshield from a supplier. It’s possible that the Safelite and Toyota windshields are manufactured by the same company.

I have glass coverage - It’s cheap - Less then $20/year.

Some states like MA, glass is covered as part of your comprehensive insurance. No extra ryder for glass.

My son used to work for an automotive glass supplier and laughed when he saw my 2023 Toyota windshield had the aftermarket glass maker just under the Toyota name on the windshield, but my 2009 was a Toyota windshield… Yeah he said they delivered to dealerships all the time…

Thank you guys for the suggestion. I didn’t know I could have added this service. I just called my insurance company after reading the suggestions here and added full glass coverage for $10 annually.

Thank you so much. Wish I knew this before.

The OEM glass is ordered new and will get installed next week. If it breaks again, I’m going with their aftermarket glass which will be 100% covered by my insurance without a deductible as I just added full glass coverage a few moments ago.

Going to the junk yard would be problematic for me anyways due to my disability. My insurance picks a place for my suv to go to and I take it there while I have another driver take me back home

From my understanding, Ford and Mopar are about the only auto company’s that make their own glass, the rest contract new replacement glass and or installing glass for all the dealers, meaning that most likely you are paying Toyota to pay Safelite to install your new windshield… Most of the OE glass including windshields are aftermarket, my son looked at my 2023 Tacoma windshield and said you see the Toyota name, look below it, that is who makes the glass for your truck as well as most if not all Toyota’s… He said the 2 highest selling glass company’s (not installers) are (at least when he left a few ears ago) Fuyao glass and XYG glass, he said they are the worst with no quality control and basically gives the aftermarket glass company’s a bad name… He said when they get the Mopar glass in, it comes in a crate and you almost have to use a jackhammer to get the crate open, very well shipped, but the 2 cheap glass company’s come in a cardboard box with the glass resting on basically a L bracket and is very easily broken… So look at the bottom driver side corner of your windshield to see who really makes it… He said all the name brand (Safelite, Laurance Glass etc) carry only OE replacement glass, but the smaller shops that are owned and run locally are a lot of times very close to junk yards and will even sell you new glass that they pull from wreck vehicles…

Your part of the world may differ… Again, my son used to (no ties anymore) work for a glass company distribution company that delivered to the installers…

Safelite told me the same thing you wrote out here, that the OEM and OE glass are the same, except one comes with a Toyota sticker and the other doesn’t.

I think I panicked and jumped too quick to ordering OEM and now I’m expected to fork out $1000 for the glass and deductible.

The reason I’m hesitant to make changes is because I had the insurance company canceled the aftermarket glass when I initially agreed to go with aftermarket, and now I’m tempted to cancel the OEM glass after learning more but I don’t want to be that guy causing inconveniences for the insurance company, especially that the OEM glass has been ordered and shipped.

If I knew about full glass coverage I would be paying nothing out of pocket right now :disappointed:

That is what happens when you take advise from a court jester, that also recommends used glass, instead of a pro mechanic with real life experience instead of reading some BS off the internet…

It’s business, nothing personal, everyone involved will sleep the same no matter your decision, and will not remember it in a week probably…
