The GS-R was the top level trim line available on their mass production models. They have a different engine from the other/lesser models. The Type R was a very limited production model, first produced in 1997 only in white with red badging, with lots of style & performance upgrades (later it was produced in greater numbers & other colors during a couple of other model years).
@sciconf the Type R had 17 more hp, more torque, a higher redline, and a longer VTEC-engaged RPM range. That along with the chassis lightening and other tuning mods meant the GSR wasn’t even in the same league, although especially for the time the GSR was a fantastic car in its own right.
