VW Golf Randomly Stalls

I have this 91 Golf GL that I bought because it seems like cheap, reliable transportation (155k). I new I’d have to put a little money into it, but now it’s not so little…

The problem is that it stalls randomly. You have to try and restart it about 4 or 5 times, and then it starts up like nothing is wrong at all. It’s totally random, but I have noticed that a hard turn in either direction also makes the car stall. Sometimes turning the ignition all the way to the “off” position seems to help lessen the # of retries, but I’m not 100% certain on that.

The mechanic, a car talk recommended one (Danny’s Auto) has replace the following in the past 2 years:

Battery Alternator Ignition Switch Starter Belts (All of them) Power Steering Tensioner. The car had a stereo put in that produced a short that fryed all the dash lights, but I’ve had this fixed as well (not sure exactly where the short was).

I’ve tried to give you as much information as possible, but I’m wondering if I should take this thing to a VW specialist already.

Thanks!

Michael
