Used EVs more affordable

The linked article says that used EVs are coming closer in cost used ICE cars. The average sales price is about the same and used EVs are newer on average. High depreciation means better affordability for buyers. They cite the end of 3 year leases as the source of many used EVs. One example is a $55,000 (new) 2024 Mustang Mach-E that sold recently for $33,000. What used ICE car can you buy for that price? If your driving and charging practices allow it, a used EV is worth considering.

In my area of Florida, EVs are cheaper than ICE or hybrid cars. I can buy a 2023 Tesla Model 3 for $25K to $32K. A ‘23 Model Y is $34K. A 2022 Audi E-Tron lists for $29.5K. A ‘23 Mach E lists for $29.5.

For less than $30K I can buy a ‘22 Volvo XC60, a ‘21 BMW X3 plug-in hybrid, a ‘23 Subaru Outback.

For that $33K, it buys me one to 2 year newer models or a step up in luxury to an ICE Lexus, Audi A5 or A6, Mercedes E class and a number of nice mid-size SUVs.

My local Tesla dealer has a lot of cars on the used car lot. $35K will get me a 2018 or 2019 Long Range Plus Model S or newer Model 3 or Y.

Customer demand is as low for used EVs as it has become for new EVs and the used market reflects that. A friend in Chicago was helping is daughter shop for cars and was told the dealers there would not take an EV in trade because they could not sell them.

If it meets your travel needs, a EV could be a good choice in a warm state. But park it outside because flooding can come with little warning!

The ev battery specialist and dealer a cousin bought a.model3 for.well under $20k after Oregon and federal credits a year ago gives a health report of the battery and a great warranty. Only handles.Tesla or Nissan leafs. Had a leaf.for $2000 fresh battery included and a 2yr warranty on the work after a OR specific ev program. Wish Wa would adopt the per mile ev tax that Oregon has. It’s $225/yr extra on your tabs for.an ev.

Mom is looking to upgrade from her 2010 prius at some point but with another hybrid. New Prius andCivic hybrid hatch are off the list. Ev would add a stop on the 300mi RT to the grandkids.

Why’s that? What is she looking for?

Both are too low with less headroom than her 2010.:No real need to replace it and its early days in the hunt. Took 3yrs to find the right car 16yrs ago.

Just got back from a 3000 trip with our new Forester Hybrid. Lots of room, great visibility, and the seats were comfortable for some 12 hour days. Not Prius mpgs, got 33, but ok with a fair amount of 75-80 mph stretches.

That’s about what a Toyota Sienna would get.

Yep, another hybrid.

And much more carrying capacity. An important feature to some people. We value the carrying capacity of a minivan enough that the downsides don’t bother us. The long wheelbase provides a smooth ride, a creature comfort we appreciate.

I’m not suggesting you made a bad choice, everyone has their own metrics for the cars they buy. I am just expanding the conversation with respect to gas mileage of hybrids.

Speaking of that, it is kinda funny, the guys buying Tacoma Hybrids are buying them for the added HP and torque, NOT fuel mileage, as the non hybrids are getting almost the same mpg = bad… lol

Remember the Honda Accord V6 Hybrid around 2005 or so? Plenty of torque and very fun to drive compared to the standard model. If I remember, in real world numbers the hybrids actually logged worse mpg than the conventional Accords.

A Tesla Model 3 is not a minivan, how do you manage?

We have a 2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L too. I’ve mentioned that many times before. Mrs JT is the primary driver of the Odyssey.
