Turn off the newsletter nag popups!

More info on the nag popup bug:

  • I’ve gotten it to happen every time on FF, Chrome and IE by clearing all cookies then refreshing the page.
  • It appears to be using a cookie to keep track of when to popup again.
  • On FF 59, that seems to be broken, so it keeps popping up with every page load.
  • About 3 seconds before popping up the page is unresponsive. All links and buttons are inactive.
  • Only seems to happen on www.cartalk.com, not community.cartalk.com
  • I’m running FF 59 on Windows 10.

The site seems to have the most problems with FF. Right after logging in with FF I get this error:

Using Chrome Version 65.0.3325.181 (Official Build) (64-bit),
not running anything special for ad blockers and have no pop ups here, logged in or not

I haven’t gotten a pop up in a while. Running Microsoft Edge 41.16299.248.0 with a Windows 10 Home operating system.

If you clear all your cookies, you’ll see it.

Chrome Version 65.0.3325.181 (Official Build) (64-bit)

OK, here’s the error that’s causing this bug. It’s an infinite recursion loop in the nmedianet.js code.

It’s happening on all browsers, but FF handles it the worst. Send this to your web developer(s):

Firefox JS console (clean profile no add-ons):

I complained about this weeks ago.

Same thing is happening to me, Safari, and it’s bad enough that I now stay away from cartalk.com. this site is fine.

To elaborate, this popup: It appears on every page, and the page is dead (no links work) during the 3-5 seconds it takes for the popup to appear and be dismissed.

Chromebook I have no idea what you are talking about, ibm thinkpad win 10 with firefox, or as wife says foxfire or chrome, I still have no idea, IE on thinkpad , I google cartalk, get the above noted carp, google cartalk discussion no carp. cartalk.com carp, on chromebook. Then pops up get out lousy newsletter popup, sure what the hell why not? I have been reprimanded for less in other places,

I don’t see it using Safari on iPad.

I don’t see it using Safari on iPad.

I tested it on the iPad mini 4. After clearing all history, it pops up with every page refresh on Safari!

Clear your history and try again.

Also happens on Macbook Pro Safari. In other words every browser I’ve tested it on. Deleting all cookies seems to be the key to reproducing it consistently.

What do you mean by ’ page refresh ’ ?

I mean refreshing the page using the browser’s reload button: image

It also pops up when navigating to any page on cartalk.com.

There is a 10 second delay before it pops up so be patient.

I see no progress has been made on this bug. :sob:

yeah, I’ve stopped looking at cartalk.com for that reason, very very annoying.

I hope someday I can visit cartalk.com without these annoying popups and long delays.

I still have not seen that popup, cleared history, cleared cookies, signed in or signed out.

Google Chrome with all settings at default.

I wish I could experience the problem to help you. Win 7, 10, chromebook, Andeoid, Chrome, firefox browsersI do not see anything like what you experience. Are you using IE, or Edge?

Safari (mac). Firefox does the same.

  • With Chrome [Version 65.0.3325.181 (Official Build) (64-bit)] it will popup once after clearing cookies and hitting cartalk.com. After that it stops popping up until the cookie expires.
  • With Firefox [59.0.2 (64-bit)] it pops up every time a cartalk.com page is loaded.
  • There is a 10 second delay before the popup so wait for it.
  • Windows 10.0.16299

The same error causing the popup is happening on all browsers, but each browser handles it differently.

Here’s the error from Chrome:
