Trouble driving after changing a tire

I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute with 105k miles. My son got a flat tire, and someone stopped to help. Before changing the tire, they pushed the 4-wheel drive button on the dashboard. They put the spare on. Now, the car will go in reverse but won’t go in drive or any other forward gear.

There Are No Mazda Dealers Around Here And No Mazdas, But I’d Like To Try And Help. I Can’t Find Information On 2001 Mazda Tributes. Is That The Make / Model Or Is There Another Name, Too ?

It is a rebadged Ford Escape.

Jenny, First Thing I’d Do Would Be To Check The Transmission Fluid Level And Correct As Necessary.
