The dumbing down of America

I respectfully request that other forum members STOP replying to this inappropriately angry troll.

Just as he/she should turn off his/her radio when T & R’s program comes on, we should all turn off our attention to this increasingly ridiculous thread.

Wow. Just wow. After reading this thread I came up with just one conclusion:

turak2 isn’t married

Alright Whitey - this guy’s outed himself. He’s a classic internet troll. We should stop feeding him at this point, and flag his post.

Great! An comment with an EASY solution. If you don’t like listening to Car Talk, Turak2, nor reading the comments here, THEN DON’T! But surely you can’t expect one person’s negative comments to balance out the MANY listeners and readers of Car Talk.

Get a life.

Got it.

Turak2 you make a very loud point. I’m a PA at the Fox network and I believe your talents would be better served contributing to one of our shows. Don’t waste your time with these numbskulls the stuff you spout is pure gold. you are exactly the type of over-opionated, easily provoked reactionary with just enough intelligence to make you dangerous person I could use to help me move up the food chain. Please go, no run
to our website and make sure you mention me. You are way over these simpletons heads.

If you don?t think cat smell in a car is a problem means you?ve never had a cat spray in your car.

As far as the call screener’s go it?s their job to A. hit their target audience and B. make the show interesting to their target audience. It appears that you?re not part of that target. Not every show is for everyone some people enjoy a show where the format is I have a 1992 mustang with the odb II code of P0102 and want to know what to do next. That type of show can be very dry but it does give you a lot of information, then there are shows that solve real world problems for people. And some people, me included enjoy a show that gives other types of car problems the real people have to deal with day to day. You stated in another post that this show was for people ??is too cheap and too lazy to go to a garage to have their problem checked?? not every noise needs to be check out, and believe it or not some people can?t afford to run to a garage for every squeak. Sometimes you need someone to say don?t worry about it or to say stop driving NOW or something in between. Also a mechanic can?t solve all car problems, like which car to get rid of, or what type of car would be a good fit for me? Those are also car problems. Something you just need a little advice, say you want to know what you should take with you if you plan on taking a 1948 chevy PU on a 2,000 trip. Yes I do call that a car problem, maybe you don?t.

From the sounds of your post this really isn?t the show for you so my suggestion is don?t listen, there was that hard? Now you don?t have to listen to a show you don?t like and you have time to listen to a show you do like, a win-win.

My opinions are subject to change with new facts.

You really shouldn’t insult Fox that way.

They may come after you

My opinions are subject to change with new facts.

I was going to say something about him need to get something, but I decided to be nice.

My opinions are subject to change with new facts.

Turak2, most people don’t want to know anything about their cars. Their interest only surfaces when their car breaks down. As a professional in the car business, I have listened to Cartalk once or twice. It is just lighthearted amusement.

If you need help or advice, the people on this forum do a good job .Advice comes from Master ASE certified techs,State Inspectors,Service Managers,Computer and Electronic specialist and experienced car hobbyists.Practical advice from 'been there, done that’car enthusiast also contribute greatly.

Do you remember Shakespirit? I do, and as delusional as he was he was interesting too read.

I have found some of the information Tom and Ray give very useful. For example, I had a real problem with my 1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass V-8 pinging when I accelerated. I had to regularly pour Casite Motor Tuneup through the carburetor and the Casite to the gasoline tank. On one show some years back, a caller called in with the same problem. Tom and Ray suggested that certain 10W-40 oils from certain oil companies in certain GM engines had this problem and suggested the caller switch to 10W-30. It seems that the polymers to extend the viscosty range could cause carbon build-up. I switched to 10W-30 and it solved my detonation problem.

It never ceases to amaze me that people won’t seek out a competent mechanic rather than ask someone not qualified for advice. My knowledge just about ends with being able to open the hood, and yet colleagues, friends and my own son are always asking for my opinion. I even post answers on the board that probably show my ignorance to the real mechanics. Tom and Ray do own a garage in Boston and they do have automotive knowledge.

It is their right to screen their calls. It is their right to answer productive, or non productive questions. They are giving a show, and if you ever listened to the show, they don’t hold themselves in very high esteem. I have a hard time believing that the tappet brothers are dumbing down America, drugs and video games seem to be doing much better job then they are.
Also, any broadcasted show over the air has call screeners. they are there to cut out the f-bombs and keep things clean for the pg audience.
Personally I don’t want to listen to deadpan answers about systems I don’t understand. I wouldn’t listen to the show if it was not how it is. pointless and somewhat entertaining. If you want to rant, send them a letter, they have plenty of hate mail posted here on the site. take a look around.
And I have the feeling that you are not an American, born and raised.

whoa, whoa, whoa! how much do you think a starter used car goes for around here? ten grand or something? only the rich? dang. the first car I got ran and drove and cost me less than five hundered dollers. again, I have the distinct impression that you are a out of towner and have fun america bashing. what is your home country? france? germany? or some other snooty spot?

I’m in agreement with you on one thing and at odds with other things.
As to their mechanical ability I even stated on this forum a few years ago that if they were making their living as mechanics on flat rate the buzzards would be picking their starved carcasses clean within 2 weeks.

As to the at odds part, the show is meant an entertainment and should not be taken too seriously so I agree with Carveaholic.

The downside to that part is that many take what is said seriously. Some of the advice doled out really steers people in the wrong direction, both as to the cause and financially.
(Case in point would be the gentleman who had a screeching noise when the A/C was turned on, and on an older V-belt fitted car besides. Their recommendation? Bad compressor; apparently never considering the problem may be due to a worn or out of adjustment belt.)

I confess that on Sunday I head right to the brothers column just so I can “gloat” over them messing up another one BUT they are mechanics that figured out how to make a really good living at this type work and not even unlock their boxes, so I wonder who is really “gloating”.

We get it. We just don’t agree with you.

From sometime in the mid 1920’s to 1970, there was a monthly series in Popular Science magazine titled “Tales From the Model Garage”. The proprietor of the Model Garage, Gus Wilson, solved all kinds of automotive mysteries. The stories were entertaining, yet informative. Other magazines had a column where an expert or experts answered specific technical automotive questions. These different venues served two different audiences. The Canadian program and CarTalk serve two different audiences.

I started reading the Popular Science Model Garage stories when I was in 7th grade. I learned quite a bit from these tales. At that time, I probably would not have understood the technical questions written specifically to an automotive expert. CarTalk serves the same function today as the Popular Science monthy series served years ago. There may be some useful information to be gained.

I’m just glad I didn’t have “Turak” as a parent.
