You’d think there is a better way. I can’t lock my key fob in my car. If it’s inside the trunk or cabin, neither will lock. 2017 Honda Accord EX-L, BTW. My wife’s 2019 Odyssey EX-L behaves the same way.
Major problem where I live is armed carjackings because it now is difficult to steal cars without access to the chipped key and/or fob. As my father used to say, not all change is progress.
