Surprising sales figures at Tesla

The Model Y is now just behind the F-150 in sales, and as I might have mentioned previously, Teslas of all types are now very commonplace on the roads in my area.

I see lots of them down here in southwest FL. Lots of F150s, F250s and F350s, too. I am surprised at the total volumes.

Side note: I find Yahoo News lazy and annoying forcing me to head to a link embedded in the article to find the actual sales numbers. Not the only news site to do things like that.

The Model Y MSRP is $47,790 before the tax credit of $7500, making the after tax price $40,240 assuming the buyer qualifies based on home earnings according the the Tesla website. The EPA range is 330 miles for the RWD version, and that’s quite good. Based in my experience with a Model 3 the actual range will be less, but I don’t warm the battery up before driving. It seems to me that loss is about equal to the battery used to warm it up. That’s just an assumption on my part.

I’ve read that Tesla recommends keeping the car plugged in when not in use(I’m assuming to the 80% max to preserve long term charging ability) and to use the departure time on the car for pre-conditioning the battery in colder climates.

I test drove a Y a couple weeks ago and am very tempted to get one for myself- the performance edition specifically. I was thinking of getting a blue one, but when I was charging my car at work, there was a blue one being charged up, so now I’m considering the extra grand for a red one instead of blue.

A white one is $1000 less than the blue one and should be available much faster.

White reduces the load on the A/C system as well. Another vote for white.

Just looked at their website and silver is now the “included” color, with white being a $1k option. Still, no matter which color I chose, the estimated delivery time stayed the same- July-August 2023

I was very surprised, a few months ago, when I learned that colors other than white came with a serious “upcharge” which helps to explain why most of the Teslas that I see are white.

That being said, the storage lot for the Tesla dealership just South of Princeton continues to swell with unsold cars. A few months ago, I estimated that there were ~50 cars there. Last week, the number of Teslas in that lot had to be somewhere in the vicinity of 200. My theory is that they might have saturated the market in this area, where it sometimes seems like every 5th car is a Tesla.

Never really been a fan of white vehicles. Maybe it’s because my mom owned so many different cars that were white. They certainly get dirty rather quickly, especially in winter.

White was definitely a problem in Colorado, harder to see on snow covered roads. Not an issue in San Jose. I’ve heard that white cars get dirty faster, but never noticed any abundance of dirty white cars on the road.

The base color was while when I bought my Model 3 in February. Unless you have an aversion to silver, I’d go for that color to save some money. I test drove a dark silver M3 and I like it.

2 truckloads of Tesla’s heading north on I-5 on the way to the Tacoma or Seattle dealers, mostly silver or black with at least one white model3. Looked like a mix of Model3 and ModelY.

M3 and MY are far and away the highest sellers. MS and MX are still sold, but are far more expensive.

At the Costco just South of Princeton, the Model Y now seems to be the most frequently-seen vehicle in the parking lot.

Not surprising given the price and size. SUVs are the most popular configuration. The range and $7500 tax credit are pluses too.
