Stuck in 1st gear

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, a couple days ago I went to shift into neutral to pull into a spot and it stalled. I started it back up realizing it is still in first. After playing around with it I found that it still shifts in through 1st and 2nd but won’t shift to 3, 4, 5 or R. Anyone else had this problem and suggestions on how to fix it?

Is the Check Engine light on?

Tester

No. The check engine light is not on. It’s because I can also still feel pressure in the clutch as well.

Have you tried shifting thru the gears with the engine both on and off?

And do you hear any strange noises from the transmission when doing so?

Tester

I have tried doing that. It still doesn’t allow me to get to the higher gears or Reverse.

I don’t hear any strage sounds either.

Sounds like the shift linkage is buggered. You might be able to reach the mechanism from the outside (if you are lucky), it may be jammed inside the transmission (if you aren’t).

At this point, cross both fingers and hope the shift cable is the problem.

Tester

Yea I heard the shift cable is labor intensive

Thanks. Fingers crossed it is this simple of a fix

So is replacing the transmission.

Remove the ball from the shift lever and then remove the boot. You should be looking down into a hole and the shift lever is probably attached to a plastic ball. That ball needs to be replaced.
