Can you guys hels me figure out what is wrong with my 2012 civic? The front left of my car is making a crunching sound when I drive. The tire sounds like it’s rubbing against the fender but it’s not. Could it be a cv axle? I am lost.
Any help would be much appreciated. https://youtube.com/shorts/UuTcOZ0ZA_M?si=1nu1X5mLzvADmMmG
Take it to a garage. If you can’t afford that, sell the car.
Are you able to repair this problem even if someone here makes a correct guess as to what is wrong ? If not then get this to a shop because you really do not need a wheel falling off while driving. It might be best to have it towed to the shop.
Are you going to repair this yourself?
I have never heard a noise like that!
Jack up that corner (place a jackstand for safety!) and slowly rotate the wheel with the car in neutral. Listen for the noise, feel for roughness in the rotation and look for any indication of rubbing.
Rock the tire top to bottom…looseness can be a bad bearing. Then side to side…looseness indicates bad suspension parts like tie rods, look for any motion.
Remove the tire, roll it around by hand… and look for a tire bump or wobble indicating a broken belt. Next get in the wheelhouse with a light and a prybar. Check every joint for looseness. Grab the CV shaft and wiggle and twist each end…there should be no looseness.
Post back with what you find.
How did you confirm the tire is not rubbing the inner fender well?? That to me sounds like the tread of a tire rubbing against a loose inner fender shield…
Mustangman gave you great info on how to check for the noise, IF you are not able, for whatever reason, to check it out, then for safety reasons have it towed to a shop of your choice…
I hear a noise. I looked and don’t see anything. What do you think it is?
Have you looked underneath for some road junk trapped and dragging, either on the ground or rubbing against a tire/wheel/brake disk?
Edit - could also be something really worn with the brake caliper. Do as @Mustangman suggested, or have a pro inspect it. The problem should be obvious (doesn’t mean cheap to fix).
+1
Many years ago, I had a strange rubbing/squeaking noise coming from the front of a rental car. It turned out to be a small stone that had lodged between the disk and the dust shield.
Mustangman,
I jacked up the car and rotated the rim to try to recreate the noise. I was unable find the noise it was making. I also played around with the wheel to make sure it’s not a wheel baring, but everything checks out normal. It’s so strange. Imma keep digging.
I’d rather just fix it than make it someone else’s problem.
Texases,
There is no road debris or anything. Everything checks out as normal. I spun the wheel while the car was jacked up and could not recreate the noise.
Davesmopar,
That’s what I thought too! It sounds like it’s rubbing, but it’s not rubbing anywhere. No rub marks or anything. It’s so strange!
