Squeaking on Toyato Echo

Hi I am new to car talk and I’m at my wits end as to what my problem could be and was hoping someone could answer my question. I have been to 2 different mechanics and neither could locate the problem.

I have a 2001 Toyota Echo. When I step on the gas it starts squeaking so loud and will not stop unless I step on the brakes. I had the brake drums cleaned but that was not the problem. I’m not sure if the mechanics checked any belts. Would anyone know what is causing this squeaking sound, almost a screech?

thanks

Did either mechanic actually drive the car and did you actually duplicate the screech for them? It seems to me that should have been the first thing to do, since you say it happens only when you accelerate. I would suspect a glazed belt, but it could be something else, too.

Screeching on acceleration is usually caused by a belt that is worn, loose, or turning an accessory that is failing.

Does the squeak occur when the car is NOT moving, or ONLY when moving?

only when I am moving.

In that case, I would have the wheel bearings checked, pronto.

thank you so much for your help!
