Scrapping a Car in Chicago Area

Hello Everyone,

I have a car that I would like to scrap soon, and the Google search for a scrap yard was surprisingly unhelpful. I figured this being such a big community and Chicago being such a big city, I might get lucky and find someone with experience scrapping in the area.

Scrap metal dealers might not accept a vehicle unless the fluids and hazardous materials are removed.

Try “Auto salvage”.

sell my car junk my car (abcap.com)

In my area the businesses who do this are in the “automobile parts recycling” or “automobile recycling” section of the yellow pages.

Just park it downtown with out of state plates and you will never see it again.

I’ve thought about taking the plates off and parking it in a paid lot that tows!

Just about any car that drives will sell for more than a junk yard will give you for it. Why do people have the junk yard take it for $175 when someone would buy it for $400 within a week?

Does Chicago have safety inspections?

A car in really bad shape that would take hundreds or thousands of dollars to repair might get absolutely no takers, if it were listed for sale

I wouldn’t pay $400 for a car that might require $2000 in repairs to pass a safety inspection . . .

I’m reasonable sure that you’re joking. In case you aren’t, they will traced your car using the VIN and charge you for the tow and time at the impound lot. This might spill over into your other vehicles and cause trouble with the state. Donate it or take it to a car recycler. Don’t worry about the tax deduction. With the federal tax modifications made in 2017 you probably can’t take advantage of it anyway.

Concur, the idea to remove the plates & let somebody else deal with it seems unlikely to work. I expect OP was facetious. In my area the state offers to pay car owners $1500 IIRC to junk their older cars. The theory is that these cars cause a lot of air pollution, so it is in the common good to give the owner an incentive to junk it and buy a newer car. There are some restrictions to qualify, the car must be drivable, and (for some reason) must not have recently failed an emissions test. OP should check if something like that is available there.

Yes, that was being facetious.
