Rotor replacement

If you replace the rotors on your car with new ones do you need to do anything to them before installing them? Do you need to clean them or apply anything to them?

Yes. New rotors should be thoroughly cleaned with a product called Brake Kleen or a non-oily residue carburetor cleaner such as Berryman B-12. Even a store brand carb cleaner such as Wal Mart sells works fine.

Many rotors may have a film of rust preventative on them and the cleaner will remove this. Sometimes the preventative is visible, sometimes it’s not, and cleaning assures this substance does not remain in place.
